Caffeine has many virtues against some skin cancers, confirms a study conducted on mice and published on Monday, which explains the protective mechanism at the molecular level.
Researchers, including Dr. Masaoka Kawasumi, Faculty of Medicine, University of Washington in Seattle (Northwest), the main author, mice genetically altered to reduce their skin in the function of the protein ATR (ataxia telangiectasia to, RAD3).
ATR plays a key role in the proliferation of skin cells damaged by ultraviolet rays of the sun.
Previous research had shown that caffeine inhibits ATR, which, being neutralized, thus leads to the destruction of these cells.
In mice genetically vulnerable to ultraviolet rays which the action of ATR protein was greatly reduced, the skin tumors have developed three weeks later than in rodents in the control group.
After 19 weeks of exposure to ultraviolet light, the genetically altered mice had 69% of skin tumors and less, and four times less aggressive than other cancers, say the authors of this work published in the online version of Annals of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The persistence of radiation eventually damage the skin cells of mice genetically altered after 34 weeks.
The results of this research indicate that the protective effects of caffeine against UV rays, already documented in previous studies, probably explained by the neutralization of the protein ATR during the pre-cancer before the tumor of the skin does develops fully, the researchers point out.
