Question by capnvalcano: What is the best career path for becoming a professor of linguistics/ TESL at the university level?
I am currently teaching ESL at a small international college in the U.S. and have taught ESL in Peru. I am going for my CELTA cert. soon and would like to get my masters in linguistics and eventually a PhD in linguistics. Is this the best career path for getting hired as a university professor in the field of linguistics/ TESL? Thanks!

For teaching Linguistics, yes. With rare exceptions, university faculty must have PhD?s, and Linguistics is a serious academic field.
Exactly what a university requires from someone who would be teaching others how to teach English as a foreign/second language I don?t know. I would think that a Linguistics PhD plus your certification and experience would be quite sufficient, but you need to check with universities that have programs to train ESL teachers.
