'Jersey Shore' Cast Returns to Seaside Heights

They're home! After spending six weeks partying hard in Florence, Italy, the Jersey Shore cast has returned to Seaside Heights, N.J., to begin filming the show's fifth season.

Snooki, JWOWW, Deanna and the rest of their cohorts were snapped hanging out at the original Jersey Shore house on Monday. No doubt the cast is happy to be back in comfortable surroundings, speaking their language and tanning their bods in American beds.

Last week, rumors surfaced that MTV would be replacing the cast after this summer, but the network was quick to put the kibosh on that talk.

"We love the present cast and their summer adventures have just begun," an MTV spokesperson said. "We currently have no plans to recast the show."

And even if they tried, original member Pauly "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio says lightening could never strike twice.

"I think we're irreplaceable," he told People.com, during an appearance in Las Vegas. "I don't think they could replace us. They'd just be people trying to be like us, anyway."

The fourth season of Jersey Shore begins on Aug. 4.

Debt and Taxes: Eric Cantor's Hot Potato Game With Boehner (The Atlantic Wire)

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor has pulled out of the bipartisan talks led by Vice President Joe Biden over raising the federal debt ceiling. Cantor told The Wall Street Journal's Janet Hook and Corey Boles that he quit the negotiations because he couldn't agree to tax increases Democrats were pushing despite both parties agreeing on $2 trillion in spending cuts. But why did he really bail? It might have something to do with him being frenemies with House Speaker John Boehner--Cantor might want Boehner to be the one making deals over raising taxes, not him.

"We've reached the point where the dynamic needs to change,'' Cantor told the Journal. "It is up to the president to come in and talk to the speaker. We've reached the end of this phase." Cantor, who just yesterday was praising the Biden group, explained that at Wednesday's meeting talks stalled repeatedly over raising taxes, an issue Biden had steered the group away from for the past six weeks. That issue can't be ignored anymore, the Republican said. But why insist it can only be dealt with by Obama and Boehner? Politico's David Rogers reports that even some Republican leaders were surprised by the decision.

When the Cantor news broke, NBC News' Chuck Todd tweeted, "Folks who watch the Boehner-Cantor relationship closely realize this move by Cantor is an interesting plot twist in their friendly rivalry." Likewise, an anonymous Democratic aide told Talking Point's Memo's Benjy Sarlin, "This move is an admission that there will be a need for revenues in the final deal to cut our deficit, and Cantor doesn't want to be the one to make that deal."

Sure, it's expected that Democrats would take shots at Republicans, but Reuters' Felix Salmon argues,

Cantor's point seems to be that he is incapable of talking about tax hikes as part of the deficit-reduction negotiations with Joe Biden; instead, the only way such a conversation can take place is if it's between Barack Obama and John Boehner. ...

Something has to give, and he doesn?t want to be in the room when that happens: he's kicking responsibility over to Boehner instead.

Let's say the Obama-Boehner meeting happens. If Boehner does give in on taxes--and that's a big if--then will Cantor and the rest of the House Republicans fall loyally in line and vote for such things? That?s far from a foregone conclusion.

Slate's Dave Weigel says Cantor's statement "sounds like Cantor wants the president to suit up and tell the country whether or not he wants to raise taxes, as he's saying in the room. There's a whiff of Br'er rabbit about this--if Obama called for tax hikes on people making, say, over $500,000 (as Kathy Hochul called for), he'd be calling for something that most voters support."

US Gold CEO Rob McEwen is talking his own book but then so is ArabianMoney whose editor is also the author of ?Dubai Sabbatical: The Road to $5,000 Gold? published 15 months ago (click here).

He thinks gold will show a similar increase in price to the 1970s in this gold boom and that takes the precious metal to $5,000. But if silver gets to $200 as he predicts that would be a five-fold rise from present prices compared with three-times for gold.

What to Make of Wired Magazine?s Report on Smart Jobs

As the economy in the United States continues its slow and sometimes painful crawl out of the latest recession, a new portrait of the job market is beginning to emerge, according to a new report by Wired Magazine, with so-called smart jobs signaling the dawn of a new era in employment.

Economists tend to agree U.S. workers have typically fallen into one of two categories over the last four decades: Employees whose salaries remain stagnant despite their tenure and years of experience and employees who accrue raises and, as a result, become financially stable or even wealthy.

The gap between the two groups, according to the new report, could very well close significantly with the emergence of smart jobs. Smart jobs, as defined by Wired Magazine, are typically jobs that are ?innovative and high tech, but most of them are located far from Silicon Valley or New York. They?re specialized, but that doesn?t mean you need a PhD or even (in some cases) a college degree to get them or to do them well?though they do require some serious training, whether on the job or in a vocational program.?

Smart jobs essentially are those jobs that require specialized knowledge and creativity, but what does the emergence of this new job class mean to the U.S. economy and to Americans? Let?s consider what the report found:

• Smart jobs offer a cross between white and blue collar work, with positions in metal manufacturing, communication technology, medical technology, chemicals, plastics, and information technology.
• Small cities and towns are the epicenter of smart job growth. Cities cited in the report as earning the status of smart job hubs include Bethesda, Maryland; Omaha, Nebraska, Decatur, Illinois; Warner Robins, Georgia; Rochester, Minnesota; and Worcester, Massachusetts.
• Smart jobs put a new spin on tried and true industries. Wired Magazine reports the reemergence of the cotton industry as an example of an industry that has gone high tech. No longer do farmers work alone to plant successful crops. Instead, companies like Bayer, develop new seeds and test the seeds to determine which offer the highest likelihood of success. But, it goes beyond seed: Companies develop new soil and fertilizer, planting, picking, processing, and spinning techniques and products to make a farmer?s job easier.

In each step of the process, the farmer is aided by a company. The company is assisted by dozens, if not hundreds, of employees. For example, companies that develop new soil use the assistance of chemists, entomologists, and plant physiologists, each of whom is doing a so-called smart job.

By Wired Magazine?s account, smart jobs are the wave of the future and will have an impact on far greater than the middle class. Cities and towns will be invigorated, drawing more smart jobs, more residents, and more tourists. Industries ? like the cotton industry ? will be looked at and run in a new, more effective way. The gap between the middle class whose salary remains stagnant and the middle class that becomes wealthy will begin to close.

But, perhaps most importantly, smart jobs will allow more Americans to use their knowledge and creativity to their benefit and to assist other Americans, like cotton farmers, by creating processes and equipment that will allow them to do their jobs more effectively and for a greater profit.

Sherlock 'means less Doctor Who'

Writer Steven Moffat's commitments to BBC One drama Sherlock will mean fewer Doctor Who episodes in 2012, the channel's controller has said.

Speaking at a media conference in Derbyshire, Danny Cohen explained the consequences of a new Sherlock series.

"He [Moffat] needs enough time to get that done and then start work on the next series of Doctor Who", the BBC One boss said.

So there will be [Doctor Who] episodes, but not as many."

Doctor Who is one of the BBC's flagship shows. The series typically runs for 13 episodes every year.

Last week the BBC announced that they were filming 14 new Doctor Who episodes, including a Christmas special, to be broadcast from next year.

But Mr Cohen said that not all of the commissioned stories would be transmitted in 2012.

"There will be some episodes, but there won't be a full series, so we won't have a 13-part run," he told the audience at The Church and Media Conference.

Mr Moffat is one of BBC One's key writers, who oversees all Doctor Who episodes.

He is also one of Sherlock's executive producers, and is currently writing one of the show's three new episodes.

"There's only so many hours a day he can be awake," Mr Cohen said, referring to Mr Moffat's workload.

"The man has to sleep and eat, and he's got a family."

Both programmes attract high viewing figures and between them received five nominations at May's TV Bafta's, with Sherlock winning two prizes.

"Steven Moffat is the creative driving force behind Doctor Who. He also, rather magically at the same time, created and got to air Sherlock. So we have to get that balance right," Mr Cohen said.

"There'll be more episodes again in 2013, for the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who. So that's a big year."

The remaining six episodes of the current series will air on BBC One later this year.

Tracy Morgan is heading to Nashville to apologize for an anti-gay rant many have criticized him for.

Comedian Tracy Morgan plans to return to Nashville next week to apologize to audience members who were offended by an anti-gay rant during a stand-up show on June 3.

During the performance, the "30 Rock" actor told the audience that if his son were gay, he would "pull out a knife and stab" him.

Morgan already has issued a public apology, saying he went too far, even for a comedy show.

On Tuesday, Morgan publicist Nicole Chabot confirmed that Morgan agreed to the Nashville meeting at the request of Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation President Jarrett Barrios.

Morgan also agreed to meet with gay and lesbian youth in New York City this week.

And he will participate in a GLAAD public service campaign to combat anti-gay bullying.

Republicans accused of killing Medicare while asking Obama to save program from financial disaster (Daily Caller)

Sen. Jeff Sessions, Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, and Rep. Paul Ryan, chair of the House Budget Committee Wisconsin, sent a letter to President Barack Obama Tuesday calling on him to submit a plan that addresses the financial insolvency of Medicare.

Just this past May, Social Security and Medicare trustees released a report predicting that Medicare would run out of funds in 2024. Previous reports predicted 2029. Moreover, for the sixth year in a row, the trustees made an ?excess general revenue Medicare funding? determination.

That means that while the program is running a $32 billion cash-flow deficit, more than 45 percent of Medicare funding is coming from the general revenue fund ? not the payroll tax that is supposed to suppor the program.

According to the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003, when the 45 percent threshold is reached, the president is required to submit a legislative proposal to Congress within 15 days of the next budget. It?s a mechanism known as the ?Medicare Trigger?.

So far, the Obama Administration has not issued a proposal, which was the thrust of the Ryan-Sessions letter Tuesday.

?As Chairman and Ranking Member of the House and Senate Budget Committees, respectively, we are deeply disappointed that your administration continues to ignore this legal obligation,? said the letter from the two Republicans. ?[Y]our administration has not provided a response to the annual Medicare trigger, ignoring the law in each of the past three years.?

Since the Medicare Trigger was reached last year, the Obama administration should have produced a proposal within 15 days of when the president submitted his budget on February 14 of this year.

In recent weeks, Sessions has been one of the most outspoken lawmakers on the need to pass a budget that addresses the national deficit.

On Tuesday, Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid called Sessions out on the Senate floor, saying that he heard the Republican ?come here and talk for hours, and he keeps talking about things that really have no bearing on what I think is important for the country today, and that is we know that the Republicans have put forward a budget that destroys Medicare.?

Later in the day, Sessions responded saying, ?I guess he [Reid] got a little tired of my harping ? Well the Republicans didn?t destroy Medicare. Give me a break.?

?The things I?ve been talking about do have bearing, and I?m disappointed that my good friend, the Democrat leader, doesn?t agree,? Sessions continued. ?The debt, the economy, gasoline prices, jobs ? those are matters that ?have no bearing on what is important to our country???

LONDON (AFP) ? A US student based in Scotland apologised on Monday for writing the fake "Gay Girl in Damascus" blog, saying he feared the hoax could harm the efforts of real-life opponents of the Syrian regime.

Tom MacMaster, a bearded 40-year-old Edinburgh University masters student and Middle East activist, confessed that he was "Amina Abdallah Arraf", supposedly a Syrian lesbian writing about the crackdown in the country.

The Arraf character became a media sensation with her reports on the movement against President Bashar Al-Assad, posting as "an out Syrian lesbian's thoughts on life, the universe and so on".

Then last Tuesday someone claiming to be her cousin wrote on the website that Arraf had been arrested, prompting supporters to set up a "Free Amina Abdallah" group on Facebook that attracted nearly 15,000 followers.

But her supposed arrest sparked scepticism about whether Arraf was for real and MacMaster finally came clean in a message on the blog on Sunday, in which he admitted he was the sole author of the posts.

"I never expected this level of attention," MacMaster wrote in an "Apology to readers" which he datelined from Istanbul, Turkey, where he and his wife were on holiday.

"While the narrative voice may have been fictional, the facts on this blog are true and not misleading as to the situation on the ground."

But in interviews on Monday, he said he was worried that his actions could boost the Syrian regime's claims that other Internet activists reporting on the crackdown were also fake.

"The fact that they can use this as an example of how the media makes up stuff really is something that troubles me," he told the New York Times by telephone.

In an attempt to explain why he carried out the hoax, MacMaster told the newspaper he was "somebody who has aspirations as a novelist".

He also expressed regret to Britain's The Guardian newspaper, saying he wanted to shut the blog and "phase out the character" but now realised that "having her abducted was not the way to do it".

Appearing by videophone with close cropped hair and a red-tinged beard, MacMaster added that it was "only a matter of time before somebody in the Syrian regime says 'see, all our opposition is fake, it's not real".

Edinburgh University said it would "suspend (MacMaster's) computing privileges" pending the results of an investigation into his behaviour.

"The University will investigate whether the student has breached University computing regulations," a spokeswoman said in a statement.

The Guardian said that in recent days, bloggers had uncovered evidence that pointed towards MacMaster and his wife Britta Froelicher, who is studying at Scotland's Saint Andrews University for a doctorate in Syrian economic development.

Major doubts emerged over the authenticity of the blog last week, when photographs that were supposedly of Arraf were revealed to be of a Croatian woman living in London.

The revelation of the hoax has sparked fury among some former followers of the blog, particularly gays and those who had been campaigning for Arraf's release.

On GayMiddleEast.com, Sami Hamwi, the pseudonym for the Damascus editor of the website, wrote: "To Mr MacMaster, I say shame on you!!!... What you have done has harmed many, put us all in danger."

"This just makes me so angry," said one comment on the Facebook group set up to press for her release.

"The situation in Syria is too dire for this sort of gameplaying!"
