DISC, YMCA offer special lifestyle programming to celebrate Senior ...

Local fitness centers celebrated the health of senior citizens Wednesday by participating in National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

The Decatur Family YMCA and Decatur Indoor Sports Center offered special programming in honor of older adults in the community.

The DISC, which has been participating in the annual event for several years, offered a health fair, Nintendo Wii video game activities and healthy snacks.

?We all know the importance of health and healthy living,? said fitness center supervisor Jeff Rounds, as he prepared to blend some peanut butter-banana and peach smoothies.

Health screenings can help give people an idea of the areas on which to focus for improved overall well-being, Rounds said as visitors perused a variety of stations staffed by area health care institutions. The gastronomically adventurous among them tried his blended beverages.

?It?s different,? one woman said as she sipped a peach, yogurt and graham cracker concoction.

Most of the 50 or so people to attend Wednesday morning?s event were DISC members headed to or from their daily workouts, Rounds said.

?It?s never too late to get in shape,? he said.

Jim Duncan, 68, stopped by the health fair on his way to exercise. Duncan started walking on the facility?s track four or five years ago. Worsening knee problems necessitated replacement surgery in October, and since last summer, Duncan has lost 70 pounds by focusing on his rehabilitation, exercise and diet.

An avid golfer, he walks two or three days a week on the DISC?s track. Duncan said the results of the surgery have far exceeded his expectations and allowed him to be more comfortable, flexible and active than he had been in years.

Denise Leonard, YMCA health and wellness director, said the Y held a variety of activities, demonstration fitness classes, breakfast and lunch, a health fair and entertainment. Staying active helps keep seniors? bodies and minds going, she said, adding that it?s important to maintain a social outlet as well as a regular physical activity regimen.

Seniors at the YMCA?s celebration had the opportunity to try out yoga and Zumba classes, listen to the music of the Gospel Messengers, play bingo and watch a fire and home safety demonstration conducted by Decatur Fire Marshal Lyle Meador and Hot Shot the clown.

?Throw rugs can throw you,? Meador said as he demonstrated the use of a nonskid rug as a safer alternative to help prevent falls.
