20 social networking tips for web designers | Feature | .net magazine

The goal for any business person jumping into social media marketing is not to add friends and swap stories and pictures, but rather, to make new business connections.?

As soon as you start networking, you increase your chances of reaching new customers. However, be prepared to work at it. Here I?ll give you some simple but effective tips for the three big ones, LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook, to help you reach new customers, promote your business and drive traffic to your website.

1. Complete your profile

Your profile information may be indexed by search engines. LinkedIn profiles receive a pretty high rank in Google. So instead of using the default URL, customise your own by using your company?s name or use keyword-rich terms that describe your web design business.

Update your status and post automatically to Twitter. Add links to your website or blog

2. Use the search feature

One of the most effective things you can do is to use the search feature.?

Search for web design groups and join them. Search for the people that are important to your industry (influencers) and ask to connect with them. Search for your competition to keep tabs on what they are up to.

3. Join design groups

Join as many design groups as you can and start commenting and posting. There?s a section just for answering questions. Use it to make yourself indispensible. Post helpful answers or pose interesting questions and over time you?ll develop a reputation for knowing your stuff.

4. Use apps and features

Use Creative Portfolio Display to showcase your portfolio. Go to the LinkedIn Applications page for more ideas.

5. Facilitate introductions

You can ask people you already know to introduce you to someone you?d like to know. This increases your credibility and improves your chances of getting connected to influencers.

6. Show recommendations

Ask people you?ve done business with to recommend your services or products.

Twitter

Twitter is a powerful micro-blogging platform. If you know how the community works, you can leverage your marketing power.

7. Complete your profile

Fill in all the fields (both required and optional) and include your website URL. You can also personalise your Twitter page to match your company?s branding. Be creative.

8. Understand the dynamics of Twitter

Twitter is a social tool, not a classifieds site. These are some tips that will help you to get followers:

Don?t spam others about your specials
Follow other users
Be active in the community (tweet and post comments about others? tweets often)
Only post useful and relevant information
Don?t tweet every 5 minutes. It becomes annoying
Engage in conversations. Retweet (reply to others? tweets) often
Don?t promote your company directly. Just be helpful. Tweet useful information, such as great web design tips
Don?t overuse hashtags

9. Build your followers base

There are many things that you can do to build your followers base:

Every time you post on your blog, invite people to follow you on Twitter
Search for Twitter users whose followers base you would love to have for yourself. See who is following them and follow those users. They will follow you back
See who is following your friends and follow them
There are Twitter directories like Twellow to find members who are likely to follow you
Use Twitter?s search feature to find profiles that interest you. Use Twitter?s RSS feed to be notified every time a tweet containing a certain keyword is made

10. Balance your followers/following ratio

Try to have a balance between people you follow and people that follow you. If a lot of people follow you and you don?t follow them, they will stop following you. If you are following plenty of people but just a few are following you, you?ll be seen as a spammer.

These are some ideas to keep both numbers balanced:

Grow slow. Instead of instantly adding 200 new friends, add maybe 50 and wait for them to follow you back. Then follow another 50
Use tools like Friend or Follow where you can check who is following you whom you are not following. It also allows you to see who is not following you back. It?s a great way to balance your ratio in just a few minutes

11. Make it worthwhile to follow you

Tweet interesting stuff. If your post is not something you would be interested in, chances are that your followers will feel the same way.

Facebook

Like other social media tools, Facebook takes time and effort to master the features and understand the community. Facebook is about connecting with people rather than selling your business.?

12. Put together a killer profile page

Create a profile page that will look attractive to your customers or business contacts. A simple and effective page is the most powerful. You should provide enough information to pique the interest of your target market, and your profile page should be created with this goal in mind.??? Take full advantage of all the new Timeline features.

13. Create a killer cover photo

Use your design skills to create a cover photo that promotes you and your brand. Be creative and stay within Facebook guidelines. This is the first image that people see so make it fun or cool or interesting.

14. Share videos and images

Facebook puts emphasis on visual content and people are more likely to share videos and images than static posts or links. Take advantage of this and post your best design work. Post more visual content such as infographics, charts, photos, etc.

15. Pin to the top

Pin important posts to stay at the top of your timeline. You can pin one post at a time for up to seven days. Remember to update your anchor pin every seven days. You can also highlight posts to give specific items more real estate on your timeline.

16. Hone your About section

Create a keyword rich About section with a hyperlink to your website.

If people have taken the trouble to click through to your About page, make sure you grab their attention

17. Promote your blog

If you have a personal company or business blog, you can import it into your Facebook notes. Each of your blog postings will then appear in your news feed and that of your contacts. This is a fantastic way to keep your business contacts up to date with your blog.

18. Use interest lists

Create interest lists in your niche, and include your brand in them to increase exposure.

19. Utilise milestones

Fill in Milestones to update fans on your accomplishments. Milestones are where you can tell your story. This is a great opportunity to add important design moments in your company.

20. Check Insights

Pay attention to your metrics on Insights. You can use this information to figure out when the best time to post is and see what content gets the most interactions.

Clearly, social media marketing takes time and effort. Spark conversations, share information, be helpful. Doing these things can lead to new connections for your business.

Collins hires new football coach

Ryan Earnest was introduced today as the Collins High School head football coach during a press conference held at the Covington County Vo-Tech Building.

This will be the first head coaching position for Earnest, a Laurel High School graduate who has been an assistant coach at Wayne County since 2007. He he has previously served as an assistant coach at Laurel and Sumrall.

Earnest will replace Fred McNair, who resigned earlier in the month to join Jay Hopson?s Alcorn State staff as the assistant head coach and passing game coordinator.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preview download is live, probably won't work on your Galaxy Nexus -- yet

Google has opted to deliver Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as an OTA update to the ICS already on the Nexus phones and tablets it just handed everyone at I/O 2012, and there's a manual download link available too. As Android Police notes, only GSM phones running the IMM330D firmware will take the update (which you probably don't have, although a fresh phone from the initial Google Play run might work.) With this release already in the wild it's surely only a matter of time before various third parties open it up to a wider variety of hardware. As always with early and somewhat untested software YMMV, keep an eye on those XDA Developers threads for the latest updates.

Update: Just that quickly, an SDK port has already popped up for the HTC One X. Of course, it's described as unstable and the author has no plans to try to fix the numerous problems but if you're desperate to see Jelly Bean you can, you just probably shouldn't.

Greece: 2 hurt in attack on soccer coach's home

ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Two people were wounded in a shootout after armed robbers invaded the Athens home of PAOK Thessaloniki football (soccer) coach Giorgos Donis and briefly held his father-in-law hostage on Thursday, police said.

The shooting occurred in Athens' upscale Kifissia area. A police officer was shot in the leg and an alleged armed robber was also wounded.

The two gunmen were arrested following a large police operation involving a helicopter and dozens of officers on foot and on motorcycles. One of the alleged attackers was identified as a 25-year-old Albanian man, while the second man was not immediately identified.

Jewelry snatched by the robbers was also recovered, police said.

The 42-year-old Donis, a former Greek National team midfielder and player for Blackburn Rovers and Sheffield United in England, was not present when two men entered his home, holding his wife's parents and two children at gunpoint.

Police were alerted after Donis' wife was returning home and apparently spotted the gunmen through a window. She alerted police guards posted outside the neighboring home of former Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou. Police said the gunmen briefly took her father hostage as they left the building, before letting him go unharmed.

Armed robbery has risen sharply in Greece since the country's major financial crisis broke out in late 2009.

Donis took over at financially struggling PAOK at the end of the season, after coaching top-flight club Atromitos and taking them to the Greek Cup Final for two successive years.

Google unveils Nexus 7 tablet, Android 4.1 and more

Google I/O, the search engine giant's annual developer conference is taking place in San Francisco, California this week. The show kicked off with a keynote event, and I was there to report live about all the things Google unveiled.

The fun?started around 9:30 a.m. PT/12:30 p.m. ET with?Google's vice president of engineering,?Vic Gundotra, stepping on stage to start things off.?He thanked everyone for being here and asked us to shut off our wireless hotspots, in order to keep everything running smoothly.

Hugo Barra, Google's?director of product management, took the stage almost right after that, to talk about some Android milestones. He explained that Android has seen over 400 million device activations. He added that over one million new Android devices are activated every day. (That's about 12 Android devices every second.)

Android Jelly Bean
The Google team didn't wait long to introduce folks to Jelly Bean aka Android 4.1.

Almost right away, the folks in attendance were ooh-ing and aah-ing as we saw how easily widgets can be rearranged in Jelly Bean, with everything resizing itself automatically to fit on the screen more neatly. But things got really loud in the conference center as we were shown that Jelly Bean will offer offline voice typing. (No more worrying about lousy reception affecting your handsfree typing.)

Other neat Jelly Bean features include the ability to quickly?swipe back to photos you've just taken, the option to pair devices with a tap (via NFC) to share photos and video, and?notifications?which can be expanded (so that you can view your inbox without actually leaving the notification screen, for example).

"It's like they're reinventing Siri," a fella near me muttered, to no one in particular, as Jelly Bean's Knowledge Graph integration was shown off. The feature allows your Android device to answer questions ??such as "which movies did Angelina Jolie star in?" ? or take certain commands, which involve searches, such as "show me?photos of tiny monkeys."

A tool called "Google Now" learns from your habits, your location and your calendar to offer you information you might need. For example, if you are in an area you don't usually travel through, Google Now might suggest some restaurants. If you happen to be at home and traffic conditions are bad, you might be offered alternate directions. The more you use Google Now, the smarter and more?useful?it should get.

Google Play
There are more than 600,000 apps in Google Play and Google has seen over 20 billion Android app installs, we were told.

So what's new?

Well, developers will now be able to offer Smart App Updates, to devices on Gingerbread and above. This means that users will only have to download changed parts of an app, rather than re-downloading the whole thing every time there's an update.

Google Play will now also offer movies and television shows for purchase, along with magazines. Google has partnered with various studios and publishers to offer this content.

Nexus 7
Looks like the rumors were true. Google's got a shiny new tablet, called the Nexus 7.?It has a 1280 x 800 HD display, a Tegra 3 processor, a 12-core GPU,?a front-facing camera, and more. It will run Google Android 4.1.

Google's team emphasized content consumption when it comes to Nexus 7. This tablet is "made for Google Play," we were told.

The Nexus 7 will start at $199 (this price will include a handful of movies and some magazines). The tablet can be ordered now and will start shipping mid-July.

Considering that Google Play will now include?significantly?more media, that the Nexus 7 hardware is pretty darn solid sounding, and that the price is right ... I'd say that Amazon's Kindle Fire has some strong competition to deal with now.

Nexus Q
The Nexus Q is described as?the "first ever?social streaming device."?It streams your media from the cloud and allows multiple people to sync up their playlists and queue up songs by using tablets or smartphones. The device?? which somehow resembles a Death Star ? will be priced at $299 and start shipping mid-July.

If everyone relied on a Nexus Q, parties could become hilarious as folks battle for control of the tunes by tapping their respective?gadgets.

Google+
Google+ is turning one-year-old tomorrow and Google appears to be pretty proud of its social network. Over 250 million people have activated Google+ accounts and there are apparently over 150 million active users on the network. Half of those users sign into Google+ daily, we're told. Curiously enough more people are using Google+ on their mobile devices, rather than on their desktops.

So it's no surprise that Google is releasing a version of Google+ for tablets. An Android version will roll out today, and an iPad version will come soon.

There will also be some updates to Google+ itself, such as the addition of Events, Party Mode, and more. In essence, it will encourage folks to?collaborate?before, during, and after events.

Google Glass
The Google+ presentation was abruptly interrupted by Sergey Brin himself, who promised us a demo which could go wrong in a lot of ways. It turns out that a team of skydivers equipped with Google Glass was above the Moscone Center, where the Google I/O is taking place.?

We watched them, through a Google Hangout, as they jumped onto the building's roof, handed a package ? containing a pair of Google Glass ... err, glasses???off to a team of bikers. Those folks jumped over obstacles and passed the package over to some folks who scaled down the building, to the third floor, where another team of bikers waited to take the cargo over to Brin. (Screenshots from the stunt here.)

Whew! Once all the excitement died down, we were told that the latest prototype of Google Glass weighs less than a pair of sunglasses?? and that there will be a variety of designs, not just the cyborg-like frames we initially saw.

In theory, you should be able to wear these glasses at any time, to capture a first-person view of everything you do.

Q: Why can?t I purchase a home in Las Vegas right now over a cash investor? I have over half down, excellent credit and pre-approval. The offer doesn?t even get acknowledged. I recently sold my home to downsize. I?ve been looking for over 6 months now. Only cash is getting any attention. There are no traditional sales it appears only those investing cash to flip later. Wrong on so many levels for our city??

A: Dear Buyer, This is a very difficult market in the distressed arena. It?s not unusual that you might have problems bidding against all cash investors. Normally there are regular sale homes you can investigate, however, I can only speak for my area and city on that. My advice is to continue working with your Buyer Agent. I?m sure your Realtor is putting in many hours trying to find you the perfect home. By the way, my last two sales did take 6 months each to close!

Accused British hacker charged in US over LulzSec attacks

LOS ANGELES?? An alleged member of the LulzSec hacking group who prosecutors say targeted the Fox and PBS television networks and Sony's film and TV studio has been indicted in Los Angeles on federal charges, federal authorities said on Wednesday.

Ryan Cleary, 20, who is already jailed in the United Kingdom where he faces prosecution over similar charges, is accused of joining other members of LulzSec in harnessing compromised computers, known as a "botnet," to steal confidential information, deface websites or attack servers. He was indicted on Tuesday.

LulzSec, an offshoot of the international hacking group Anonymous, has taken credit for hacking attacks on government and private sector websites.

Anonymous and its offshoots, including LulzSec and AntiSec, initially focused on fighting attempts at Internet regulation and the blocking of free illegal downloads, but have since taken on other targets including Scientology and the global banking system.

The charges come just over two months after accused LulzSec hacker Cody Kretsinger pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles in April to taking part in an extensive computer breach of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

In March, court documents revealed that Anonymous leader "Sabu," whose real name is Hector Xavier Monsegur, had pleaded guilty to hacking-related charges and provided the FBI with information on fellow hackers.

According to the indictment released by the FBI, Cleary and his unnamed co-conspirators hacked into the computer systems of Fox Entertainment Group and Sony Pictures Entertainment and stole confidential user information.

The indictment also charges Cleary and his co-conspirators of defacing the PBS website and launching "denial of service" attacks against an online gaming website and Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency.

Cleary is charged with one count of conspiracy and two counts of unauthorized impairment of a protected computer. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison if convicted at trial.

Anonymous, and LulzSec in particular, became notorious in late 2010 when they launched what they called the "first cyber war" in retaliation for attempts to shut down the WikiLeaks website.

They attacked websites including MasterCard.com, which had tried to block payments to WikiLeaks after apparent pressure from the U.S. government following the release of thousands of diplomatic cables.

Speaking to E! News at a press preview of Hotel Transylvania - one of three movies Selena filmed this year - the 19-year old said she misses recording and hopes to get started on a new record soon.

Mentioning that she's inspired these days by Jason Mraz and Parachute, Selena added that she also plans to reunite with Rock Mafia and Toby Gad. She then plans to go on tour in promotion of the CD.

Findings of two new studies might send shock waves to American parents as the studies have blamed parents for making kids obese. According to the studies, negligence of parents on the physical activities of children might have resulted into growing incidences of obesity.

The findings of the studies have been published in the journal Early Child Development and Care reports. The journal has reported that parents who spend less time with their children are cause of the growing cases of obesity. It has been found that in the absence of parents, children spend more time in watching TV and in playing video games.

The co-author of the studies, David Schary, said, ?Across all parenting styles, we saw anywhere from four to five hours a day of sedentary activity?. The sedentary lifestyle has been linked to obesity. Sedentary lifestyle makes people lazy, which ultimately lead to obesity.

Woman drives car onto golf course, into sand trap

UXBRIDGE, Mass. -- A woman told police she drove her car into a sand trap on a Massachusetts golf course because her GPS sent her the wrong way.

Police say she was drunk.

Patricia Maione was held on $10,000 bail after pleading not guilty Tuesday to charges including driving with a suspended license and fourth offense drunken driving.

Authorities say the 47-year-old woman?s car got stuck at the Whitinsville Golf Club in Northbridge on Monday. She told police her GPS told her to turn left, which she said led her through a corn field and onto the golf course.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that police say they found a cup filled with alcohol in her car.

There were golfers on the course at the time, but no one was hurt.

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba says he's joining Shanghai Shenhua to help develop football in China.

The Ivory Coast international insists the time is right to try and achieve something more than winning trophies.

"It was a professional decision based on what I've done for the last eight years with Chelsea and what I did in Europe, winning the Champions League," said Drogba.

"I think it was the right time to go to a different continent because as I've said before I love to travel.

"I love to learn and to see different cultures. So for me it's a very good experience.

Another reason why dads and hopeful dads should quit smoking now

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? As you decide what to get dad for Father's Day, you might want to consider what he gave you when you were conceived. If he smoked, your genes are likely damaged, and your odds for cancers and other diseases throughout your life could be increased. A new research report appearing online in the FASEB Journal, scientists show for the first time in humans that men who smoke before conception can damage the genetic information of their offspring. These inherited changes in DNA could possibly render an offspring in the womb susceptible to later disease such as cancer.

This provides evidence showing why men should be urged to stop smoking before trying to conceive in the same way women have been urged to quit. Interestingly, a fertile sperm cell takes about three months to fully develop; therefore men would ultimately need to quit smoking long before conception to avoid causing genetic problems.

"That smoking of fathers at the time around conception can lead to genetic changes in their children indicates that the deleterious effects of smoking can be transmitted through the father to the offspring," said Diana Anderson, Ph.D., a researcher involved in the work from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford, in the United Kingdom. "These transmitted genetic changes may raise the risk of developing cancer in childhood, particularly leukemia and other genetic diseases. We hope that this knowledge will urge men to cease smoking before trying to conceive."

To make this discovery, Anderson and colleagues used DNA biomarkers to measure genetic changes in the paternal blood and semen around conception, as well as maternal and umbilical cord blood at delivery in families from two different European regions in central England and a Greek island. Information regarding the lifestyle, environmental and occupational exposures of these families was taken from validated questionnaires. The combined analysis of exposures and DNA biomarkers was used to evaluate the role of exposures before conception and during pregnancy in the causation of genetic changes in the offspring. These results have strong implications for the prevention of disease.

"This report shows that smoking is a germ cell mutagen. If dad uses cigarettes, his kids will be affected even before they are born," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "As Father's Day approaches, family members may want to give dads and prospective dads the help they need to quit smoking for good."

Republican hardliners in both chambers are holding their tongues over Mitt Romney?s plan to grant qualified illegal immigrants legal status and even U.S. citizenship.

Similar proposals in the past have led to charges from these conservatives that the beneficiaries would be rewarded with ?amnesty? after entering the country illegally. They?ve called instead for tougher enforcement and the deportation of all illegal immigrants.

Yet 24 hours after Romney, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, outlined a broad proposal extending permanent residency to some illegal immigrants ? and creating a pathway to citizenship for others ? those same Republicans have been uncharacteristically silent on the idea.

Rep. Lamar Smith (R-Texas), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee who?s long been critical of ?amnesty? proposals like the DREAM Act, praised Romney?s plan this week, saying it was ?right to recognize that immigration reform needs to be geared towards bolstering our economy and job creation.?

Smith blamed President Obama?s economic policies for high unemployment among Hispanics, and he blasted the administration?s recent executive action allowing some illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children to stay and work, saying it?s ?amnesty? that will ?further diminish job opportunities for Hispanics struggling to find a job.?

But the Texas conservative made no mention of Romney?s proposal to extend permanent residency to qualified illegal immigrant students and forge a pathway to citizenship for those who join the military. The latter provision goes even a step further than Obama?s executive directive, which does not include the possibility of citizenship.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), another DREAM Act opponent, also praised Romney?s plan without mentioning the ?amnesty? provisions.

?I applaud Governor Romney?s commitment to working to improve our broken immigration system,? he said. ?America has been, and remains, a welcoming country for legal immigration. But the President?s last-minute, election-year ploy can?t erase the fact that he has failed to lead.?

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), among Congress?s most vocal opponents of illegal immigrant rights, was also notably uncritical of Romney?s plan, telling The Wall Street Journal that he?s happy to see Romney advocating for tougher enforcement policies at the border. While King said he has questions about some parts of the plan, according to the Journal, he also expressed confidence that Romney is ?committed to the rule of law.?

The offices of a number of other immigration hardliners ?including Sens. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) and Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), and Reps. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) and Ben Quayle (R-Ariz.) ? did not respond to requests for comment on Romney?s plan.

The immigration issue has been a prominent one in this year?s presidential race, with both sides vying for a bigger slice of the ever-growing Latino vote. Romney has started at a disadvantage because he tacked far to the right amid the GOP primary, vowing to veto the DREAM Act and proposing to make life so tough for illegal immigrants that they would ?self deport.?

Recognizing an opening, Obama last week overhauled his immigration policy, announcing he will forego deportations for qualified high-achievers brought to the U.S. before the age of 16 ? roughly the same population targeted by the DREAM Act.

The surprise move left Romney and other GOP leaders scrambling for a strategy to counter the new policy without alienating either Latinos or their conservative base.

On Friday, Romney sought to thread that needle, releasing the contours of a plan that?s both tough on the enforcement side and more lenient to some illegal immigrants than many conservatives want to go.

Characterizing comprehensive immigration reform as a ?moral imperative? and an ?economic necessity,? Romney proposed to increase the number of border patrol agents, make e-verify mandatory for employers, complete the fence along the Mexican border and advance an exit-verification system designed to identify and deport legal visitors who overstay their visas ? all ideas sure to win favor from conservatives.

Hoping to appeal to Latinos, Romney also offered green cards to ?every foreign student who obtains an advanced degree in math, science, or engineering.? For those entering the military, his plan goes further.

?Mitt Romney believes that young illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States as children should have the chance to become permanent residents, and eventually citizens, by serving honorably in the United States military,? reads the Romney campaign?s fact sheet on the plan.

Roy Beck, president of Numbers USA, which advocates for tougher immigration laws, welcomed the plan, praising Romney for resisting temptations to walk back his primary promises to veto the DREAM Act, finish the border fence and mandate an e-verify system. Beck called this restraint ?quite remarkable? given that Romney unveiled his plan before the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEAO).

Still, foreshadowing the likely push-back from conservatives on Capitol Hill, Beck said ?there are things we oppose and we will oppose? in Romney?s proposal, particularly the notion of providing green cards to recipients of advanced degrees.

?The idea that somehow or another we need more legal immigrants,? Beck said Friday in a telephone interview, ?is kind of preposterous.?
