New Google Maps for Android: Slick Looks, Better Navigation

New Google Maps for Android: Slick Looks, Better Navigation

A tweaked version of Google Maps for Android is now rolling out, which includes a bunch of new features first mentioned by the search giant back in May.

The new app appeared in the Play store last night, and brings the app originally previewed at I/O in May to the masses. Echoing the aesthetic of the browser-based Maps, the overall look is sleek: fewer buttons, clearer fonts, tighter menus.

In terms of features, navigation is heavily improved: alternative routes are presented more clearly, traffic issues pop up instantly, and there's even a dynamic re-routing feature which will update your directions if you stray from your intended path. Elsewhere, reviews have been given an overhaul?including Zagat rating being converted to fit with Google's five-star scale?and local guides are more prominent than before.

It's not all great news: sadly, the offline maps option has been removed from the app. But don't fear, there's an Easter egg built in which means you can kinda claw back that feature. Find the area you want available offline, search for "OK maps", and the current pane should be cached. Not convenient, but better than nothing.

The app is rolling out over the next week or so to devices with Android 4.0 and up. [Google Play]

Judge orders NFL, players to negotiate over concussion-related claims

PHILADELPHIA?The NFL and former players must try to negotiate a dispute over whether complaints about concussion-related injuries belong in court or in arbitration, a federal judge said Monday.

U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody of Philadelphia had planned to rule July 22 in a legal fight that involves about 4,200 former players and could be worth billions of dollars.

MORE: Former Jet to have brain studied | Lem Barney: Football ?is becoming more deadly??

But instead she ordered the two sides to begin mediation with retired federal Judge Layn Phillips. The retirees want the right to sue the league, while the NFL insists the claims must be arbitrated under terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Brody asked for a progress report by Sept. 3, while placing a gag order on the lawyers. Both sides agreed to comply.

Many former players say they suffer from dementia, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological conditions, which they believe stem from on-field concussions. The league insists that safety has always been a top priority.

Both sides have something to fear from a court ruling. Brody could throw out the lawsuits and steer them to arbitration; or accept some or all of them, and open up internal NFL files to plaintiffs' lawyers looking for a smoking gun. Still, sports law professor Marc Edelman, who teaches at Fordham University and Baruch College, called it "highly unlikely" that either side would budge during mediation.

"The sentimental impact of this type of case is one that would make it strongly advantageous for the plaintiffs to get to a jury," Edelman said. "The position the NFL has taken is they are not liable for anything that's happened to the players."

In legal arguments before Brody in April, NFL lawyer Paul Clement said teams bear the chief responsibility for health and safety under the contract, along with the players' union and the players themselves. Players' lawyer David Frederick accused the league of concealing studies linking concussions to neurological problems for decades.

"The plaintiffs got in a lot of their case, that the NFL glorified violence all these years. I would think in mediation that Judge Phillips would let it go further, if that's what they want to talk about," said Andrew Brandt, who directs a sports law center at Villanova University School of Law.

In recent years, a string of former NFL players and other concussed athletes have been diagnosed after their deaths with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, including popular Pro Bowler Junior Seau and lead plaintiff Ray Easterling. Both committed suicide last year.

About one-third of the league's 12,000 former players have joined the litigation since 2011. Some legal experts feel the NFL may be most vulnerable on claims from a few hundred "gap" players, who played during years when there was no contract in place.

"We respect and will comply with the court's order regarding mediation and will be available to meet with Judge Phillips at his direction," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in a statement. The Plaintiffs' Executive Committee for the former NFL players also pledged to "follow the court's directive."

Phillips, 61, had a meteoric law career before leaving the federal bench in Oklahoma and moving to private practice before age 40. He was a tennis standout at the University of Tulsa, where he also played flag football, according to an online biography. He is now based in Newport Beach, Calif.

"Judge Phillips is pleased to have been appointed ... in this challenging and complex matter. He looks forward to working with the parties to achieve resolution," his office said in a statement.

Michelle Obama invites Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren to D.C.

Warren

FONTANA -- Mayor Acquanetta Warren soon will be visiting Washington at the request of first lady Michelle Obama.

Warren received an invitation from the first lady to celebrate Fontana's role in the Let's Move! Cities, Towns and Counties initiative.

The initiative is dedicated to solving the country's childhood obesity epidemic within a generation, so that children born today will grow up healthier.

The call to action for mayors and other local elected officials was launched in June 2010. In response, hundreds of local elected officials took steps to prevent childhood obesity to make their communities healthier for everyone.

Warren is spearheading the movement in Fontana.

"I am honored to receive an invitation from the first lady," Warren said in statement on the city's website. "Childhood obesity has been a great concern of mine for many years and is why I started the Healthy Fontana Program."

Warren, a former councilwoman who was elected mayor in 2010, added that she is proud to have recognition from a national program that understands the need to work together for families' futures.

Along with the celebratory event with the first lady, Warren received a special invitation from the National League of Cities to participate in a group discussion with 20 other local elected officials.

The meeting will be an opportunity for the League of Cities and their federal partner, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, to hear feedback on how the Let's Move! Cities, Towns and Counties initiative is going.

Warren is leading a "Walk with the Mayor" at 7 a.m. Friday. The community is invited to meet her at the Lewis Library and Technology Center, 8437 Sierra Ave., to discuss Fontana and getting active.

Wahanda Lures Former Just Eat CEO Over As New Chairman To Scale Bookings Business

7aa51e0c6c358e488477fc6652ae279cBack in February, online food ordering and delivery site Just Eat lost long-time CEO Klaus Nyengaard, who opted to 'spend more time in Denmark', rather than splitting time between there and London. Well, it looks like he will carry on shuttling. Health and beauty marketplace, Wahanda, has lured Nyengaard over to become its new chairman, while Chris Wood, who was MD at TopTable, joins as Chief Commercial Officer. This bolstering of Wahand's board and executive team sees it powering ahead as the world's largest health and beauty site. Health and beauty is a $10b+ industry in the UK alone, and still largely booked offline.

Jeter to start rehab assignment

NEW YORK (AP) ? New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will play start playing in minor league games on Saturday as he works his way back from an ankle injury.

The team announced on Friday that Jeter, who hasn't played this season due to a broken left ankle, has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment and is scheduled to join Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees captain is scheduled to play at least five innings in Saturday's game.

Jeter broke his ankle in the opener of the AL championship series on Oct. 13. After surgery, he played five spring training games because of soreness. A new break was discovered on April 18.

On Friday at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Fla., Jeter took six simulated at-bats against minor league pitchers and ran the bases after putting the ball in play. He also did one of his signature jump throws to first after fielding a grounder in the hole during defensive drills.

PFT: Police have not found Lloyd murder weapon

NFL Draft Packers FootballAP

There is loyalty, and there is inertia.

Either way, the persistence of a large bloc of Packers fans has been rewarded, as 5,000 names are being taken off the team?s season-ticket waiting list, the most in one offseason.

The Packers gave a glimpse of the expansion of Lambeau Field yesterday, which includes 7,000 new seats. The bulk of those are going to people who have been waiting to get in for decades.

?The folks coming off the list have been on for 30 years, so there?s some patience on their part. That?s the great thing with the support the Packers have,? Packers director of public affairs Aaron Popkey said, via WBAY.

Team officials said the project, which includes suites, escalators, new concession stands and standing room areas is 98 percent finished, and should be complete before the team?s shareholders meeting in late July.

While they took pride it making it look like it blended into one of the league?s most traditional buildings, they think it?s going to be even louder than before.

?I think it?ll be pretty dramatic in that top area,? said Stuart Zadra, vice president of Hammes Company, the contractor on the project. ?It?s got metal behind it that?s just going to reflect, and I?m sure people are going to be pounding on that metal cheering on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.?

And with 7,000 new voices, the effect should be dramatic.

Quelle surprise! France and EU no longer buddies

BRUSSELS (AP) ? France stood at the cradle of the European Union and brought it back from crisis time and again ? but now it's the French who are turning against the creature they helped conceive after World War II.

A spat that started over a fervent Gallic defense of film subsidies in the face of a globalized Hollywood has mushroomed this week into a dispute that reflects larger troubles with France's economy, and growing frustration with the way an ever-more powerful Brussels is managing the EU.

The dispute is the main undercurrent of an EU summit Thursday and Friday, where French President Francois Hollande will come face to face with the head of the EU's powerful executive commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.

Hollande tried to downplay the controversy at the start of the summit. "We are talking about European policies. Personalities are only secondary," he said entering the summit headquarters.

A fight between France and the EU will always stand out though.

"A large part of the politics of Europe has been molded by France. So now, we are facing this paradox," said Hendrik Vos, a professor and expert on European affairs at Ghent University.

The paradox is fueled by the economic crisis, during which Barroso's European Commission has imposed hard austerity on member states. To some in Hollande's Socialist government, it has turned the EU into a cold-hearted beast that forces governments to serve the fat cats of the financial markets at the expense of workers and the common man.

President Hollande is suffering from sagging popularity, France's rising unemployment and a new recession. It makes for a poisonous political mix that has claimed diplomatic niceties as its first victim.

For months, frustration in Paris had been mounting over the insistence of the European Commission to include film and other cultural subsidies in free trade negotiations with the United States. Some French voices suggested that the EU trade negotiator was working more with the Americans than the French.

Then, the Commission recommended harsh medicine for France to revive its economy. This hit hard in a nation that still considers itself as a global and essential power, unaccustomed to having someone else say what it should do.

It seems the political beast that France helped conceive is now turning against its creator. Suddenly grand rhetoric turned against Brussels.

France's Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg spoke Sunday of "this European ruling class, which doesn't notice that the European Union is the only region in the world that organized its own recession in a way, when everywhere in the world there's growth."

He said this "Brussels-style sickness will be fatal for Europeans" and added for good measure that Barroso "is the fuel of the National Front" far-right party, arguing that EU policies are driving voters to the nationalist fringes.

For Barroso, this proved too much. He counterattacked, saying that "it would be good if some political leaders understand that it is not by attacking Europe, by making the Commission a scapegoat for difficulties that they will get very far."

On Wednesday, the French government spokeswoman said Montebourg's "frankness" may be grating, but that "the heart of his comments ... are comments that we share."

Compounding France's problems is the fact that the longstanding axis linking Paris to Berlin is showing signs of strain. The relationship between conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel ? whose country is increasingly calling the shots at summits like the one this week ? and the leftist Hollande is weaker than under Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

At the same time, France's confrontational stance comes at a time when Barroso's Commission is facing pressure from many sides, with struggling southern nations picking on the EU for forcing them into choking budget cuts that helped push youth unemployment to unprecedented levels.

Even the Netherlands, one of the six original EU members, is now saying "enough is enough" when it comes to further integration and centralization.

"The time for an 'ever-closer union' in the EU at all levels is a thing of the past," the government said in a statement last week.

The two-day summit opening Thursday is showing some signs of change in the air that could benefit France.

After years of being dominated by the free-market, debt-cutting and austerity mantra to pull the continent out of recession, the summit will be looking at measures to ease unemployment with government support, even if the funds underpinning the initiative still look paltry compared with the task at hand.

"Where it was austerity and savings the past few years, we will see at the summit much attention for jobs for youngsters and growth stimuli," said Vos.

Perhaps Hollande should take heart that the pendulum is slowly swinging back.
