A look at telecom-industry subscriber reports

Telecommunications companies have begun releasing their earnings reports for the latest quarter. Here is a summary of reports for selected telecommunications companies and what they reveal about their own and the industry's prospects.

? July 19: Verizon Communications Inc. says its wireless unit gained a net 1.2 million subscribers ? a strong result in an industry where subscriber gains have tapered off now that nearly everyone has a cellphone. Of the new subscribers, 888,000 were on contract-based plans, which are the most lucrative. Verizon Wireless has 94.2 million retail subscribers. The profit margin at Verizon Wireless was the highest ever, as average monthly fees for contract-signing subscribers rose 3.7 percent to $56.13. Verizon is benefiting from the growing popularity of smartphones, which come with data fees.

? July 24: AT&T Inc. says it saw declining smartphone sales, leading to the best profitability ever in its wireless arm as it saved on phone subsidies. It activated 5.1 million smartphones in its latest quarter, down from 5.5 million a year ago. Much of the decline came because AT&T subscribers are holding on to their phones longer. AT&T added a net 320,000 subscribers on contract-based plans in the quarter. However, more than half of the new subscribers were tablet users, who pay less than smartphone users.

? July 26: Sprint Nextel Corp. reports it was successful in persuading smartphone subscribers to pay up for "unlimited data" service, and its service revenue zoomed, beating estimates. Sprint activated 1.5 million iPhones in the quarter, the same number as in the first quarter. By contrast, AT&T and Verizon saw a drop in iPhone activations as the excitement around the latest model, the iPhone 4S, cooled. Sprint is the only one of the four national wireless carriers that still offers unlimited data service, though it offers relatively slow data speeds.

MetroPCS Communications Inc., a provider of contract-free service, says it lost about 186,000 subscribers to end the quarter at 9.3 million.

? July 31: Frontier Communications Corp. ended the quarter with 3.1 million residential lines, down about 67,000 from the previous quarter.

? Aug. 1: Comcast Corp. says it added 158,000 phone customers to end the quarter with 9.7 million.

? Aug. 2: Time Warner Cable Inc. says it added 45,000 residential phone customers to end with 5 million.

? Aug. 3: U.S. Cellular Corp., a unit of Telephone Data and Systems Inc., lost a record 48,000 subscribers from contract-based plans in the quarter. That was partly offset by a gain of 20,000 contract-free customers. The company ended the quarter with 5.8 million customers, making it the seventh-largest cellphone company in the country.

? Monday: Leap Wireless International Inc., the nation's sixth-largest cellphone carrier and operator of the Cricket brand, says it lost 289,000 customers during the quarter to end with 5.9 million.

Coming up:

? Wednesday: CenturyLink Inc.

? Thursday: T-Mobile USA, a unit of Deutsche Telekom AG; Windstream Corp.

Medieval Feast @ Rigoni's Bistro ? Playing House

When someone offers me meat on a spit, there?s no way I can refuse. Enter the Medieval Dress Up Dinner at Rigoni?s Bistro on Leigh Street, helping to celebrate Coopers 150th Anniversary and raising money for Variety. I found out about it on Facebook, and thankfully mum and dad were both in. We got dressed at my new place, before walking over to join the festivities.

The lamb and pork were already set up on the street. It was great having the spits out in full view rather than hidden away out the back, plus they made something warm to congregate around while we stood outside. Inside one long table was set up, each place with our own tankard to fill with beer throughout the night. Most people dressed up, which was great, and it was fun watching people?s heads turn as they walked down Leigh Street.

I wasn?t just hanging out with mum and dad for the night (although I was lucky enough to have a song dedicated to me about my mum courtesy of Elbow Skin). Caitlin from the Good Food Society was there with her friend Leigh, which helped the night get extra merry. There was free flowing wine and beer throughout the night, with everything provided by Coopers & Aramis Wines.

As well as all the food and drink the night was also about raising money for Variety. Rigoni?s have/sponsor?a car in the Variety Bash?and seem to put a lot into supporting the charity. So there was a silent auction on the night, we bid on a few of the bottles of alcohol, but didn?t come away with anything at the end of it. I forget the exact numbers, but there was over $1000 extra raised from the auction.

There was meat, meat, and more meat. We started with something a bit lighter, prawns and oysters, before moving onto a plate of meat pasties, terrine, pork pies, and other meats. We popped outside to check on the meat on the spits (i.e. stare at it longingly) and by this stage they?d begun roasting the quail. Boy did they look delicious.

The plates of meat were brought to the table ? there was quail, pheasant, pork, and lamb. There were supposedly steaks on the menu as well but I didn?t see any. The lamb was hands down my absolute favourite. The plate was piled high, and the meat was just so succulent. I would have loved to eat a lot more than I did, but I just couldn?t fit it all in.

We were entertained throughout the night by the two funny and hilariously rude guys from Elbow Skin, but it was also great just chatting away with everyone. Everyone was in good spirits, and how could you not be? The fun and festive Medieval theme was definitely embraced. The girls behind the bar were lovely, and always seemed to be there at the perfect moment to refill my glass.

I?m just adding it to the growing list of great experiences at Rigoni?s. Now I just need to have a day off so that I can head there for breakfast again.

Jobs report has something for Obama and Romney

With higher-than-expected job creation in July, President Obama avoided a major blow in Friday?s unemployment report. But the rise in the jobless rate to 8.3 percent, up from 8.2 percent, mitigated the positive news ? and handed campaign fodder to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Voters focus on the unemployment rate more than any other economic indicator, and the slight uptick feeds the narrative that the tepid economic recovery is losing altitude ? a drag on Mr. Obama?s reelection prospects three months before Election Day.

Polls show the public still assigns much of the blame for the nation?s economic woes to former President George W. Bush, who left office in January 2009 amid an economic crisis. But with each passing month, Obama owns the economy, and he could pay the price for that in November. No president has been reelected with unemployment over 7.4 percent since the Great Depression.

IN PICTURES: On the campaign trail with President Barack Obama

?The job creation number is a little positive news that President Obama can maybe boast about,? says Julian Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University in New Jersey. ?But when the unemployment rate goes up, that?s the headline.?

Even with unemployment at or above 8 percent for 42 consecutive months, Obama has held onto a slight advantage against Mr. Romney. The Real Clear Politics average of major polls show Obama leading by 2.7 percent points nationally and ahead by a higher margin in key swing states.

The Department of Labor?s employment report for July showed overall growth of 163,000 jobs in the nonfarm private-sector. Analysts had predicted growth of fewer than 100,000 jobs.

?That keeps the president in the ballgame? for reelection, says Dante Scala, a political scientist at the University of New Hampshire, Durham. ?If the jobs numbers had come in below 100,000, I think voters ? who are already in a bad mood ? would have fairly quickly thrown in the towel on the president.?

Both Obama and Romney addressed the employment report Friday. In remarks aimed at pressuring Congress to extend tax cuts for the middle class, the president touted the job-creation number.

?We've now created 4.5 million new jobs over the last 29 months and 1.1 million new jobs so far this year,? Obama said. ?Those are our neighbors and family members finding work and the security that comes with work. But let's acknowledge, we've still got too many folks out there who are looking for work.?

Mr. Romney called the rise in unemployment a blow to the middle class, and touted a five-point plan he released Thursday that he says will help the middle class.

The jobs report is ?another hammer blow to the struggling middle-class families of America because the president has not had policies that put American families back to work,? Romney said at an event in North Las Vegas. ?I do. I'll put them in place and get America working again.?

Romney promised to create 12 million new jobs in his first term. His plan aims to make the nation energy independent, improve schools, increase trade, help small businesses through lower taxes and regulation, and address the federal budget deficit.

The Obama campaign says the Romney plan cuts taxes for the wealthy at the expense of the middle class.

Romney advisers say that as voters get to know the former Massachusetts governor better, their comfort level with him will grow. Voters will start paying closer attention to the race with the conventions in late August and early September, then the debates in October.

Analysts expect the race to remain tight all the way to the end, barring some major unforeseen event.

?We?re in a gray zone, where the election could be decided on the margin,? says Mr. Scala. ?It could come down to who has the better campaign.?
