PFT: Police have not found Lloyd murder weapon

NFL Draft Packers FootballAP

There is loyalty, and there is inertia.

Either way, the persistence of a large bloc of Packers fans has been rewarded, as 5,000 names are being taken off the team?s season-ticket waiting list, the most in one offseason.

The Packers gave a glimpse of the expansion of Lambeau Field yesterday, which includes 7,000 new seats. The bulk of those are going to people who have been waiting to get in for decades.

?The folks coming off the list have been on for 30 years, so there?s some patience on their part. That?s the great thing with the support the Packers have,? Packers director of public affairs Aaron Popkey said, via WBAY.

Team officials said the project, which includes suites, escalators, new concession stands and standing room areas is 98 percent finished, and should be complete before the team?s shareholders meeting in late July.

While they took pride it making it look like it blended into one of the league?s most traditional buildings, they think it?s going to be even louder than before.

?I think it?ll be pretty dramatic in that top area,? said Stuart Zadra, vice president of Hammes Company, the contractor on the project. ?It?s got metal behind it that?s just going to reflect, and I?m sure people are going to be pounding on that metal cheering on Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.?

And with 7,000 new voices, the effect should be dramatic.

Quelle surprise! France and EU no longer buddies

BRUSSELS (AP) ? France stood at the cradle of the European Union and brought it back from crisis time and again ? but now it's the French who are turning against the creature they helped conceive after World War II.

A spat that started over a fervent Gallic defense of film subsidies in the face of a globalized Hollywood has mushroomed this week into a dispute that reflects larger troubles with France's economy, and growing frustration with the way an ever-more powerful Brussels is managing the EU.

The dispute is the main undercurrent of an EU summit Thursday and Friday, where French President Francois Hollande will come face to face with the head of the EU's powerful executive commission, Jose Manuel Barroso.

Hollande tried to downplay the controversy at the start of the summit. "We are talking about European policies. Personalities are only secondary," he said entering the summit headquarters.

A fight between France and the EU will always stand out though.

"A large part of the politics of Europe has been molded by France. So now, we are facing this paradox," said Hendrik Vos, a professor and expert on European affairs at Ghent University.

The paradox is fueled by the economic crisis, during which Barroso's European Commission has imposed hard austerity on member states. To some in Hollande's Socialist government, it has turned the EU into a cold-hearted beast that forces governments to serve the fat cats of the financial markets at the expense of workers and the common man.

President Hollande is suffering from sagging popularity, France's rising unemployment and a new recession. It makes for a poisonous political mix that has claimed diplomatic niceties as its first victim.

For months, frustration in Paris had been mounting over the insistence of the European Commission to include film and other cultural subsidies in free trade negotiations with the United States. Some French voices suggested that the EU trade negotiator was working more with the Americans than the French.

Then, the Commission recommended harsh medicine for France to revive its economy. This hit hard in a nation that still considers itself as a global and essential power, unaccustomed to having someone else say what it should do.

It seems the political beast that France helped conceive is now turning against its creator. Suddenly grand rhetoric turned against Brussels.

France's Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg spoke Sunday of "this European ruling class, which doesn't notice that the European Union is the only region in the world that organized its own recession in a way, when everywhere in the world there's growth."

He said this "Brussels-style sickness will be fatal for Europeans" and added for good measure that Barroso "is the fuel of the National Front" far-right party, arguing that EU policies are driving voters to the nationalist fringes.

For Barroso, this proved too much. He counterattacked, saying that "it would be good if some political leaders understand that it is not by attacking Europe, by making the Commission a scapegoat for difficulties that they will get very far."

On Wednesday, the French government spokeswoman said Montebourg's "frankness" may be grating, but that "the heart of his comments ... are comments that we share."

Compounding France's problems is the fact that the longstanding axis linking Paris to Berlin is showing signs of strain. The relationship between conservative Chancellor Angela Merkel ? whose country is increasingly calling the shots at summits like the one this week ? and the leftist Hollande is weaker than under Hollande's predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

At the same time, France's confrontational stance comes at a time when Barroso's Commission is facing pressure from many sides, with struggling southern nations picking on the EU for forcing them into choking budget cuts that helped push youth unemployment to unprecedented levels.

Even the Netherlands, one of the six original EU members, is now saying "enough is enough" when it comes to further integration and centralization.

"The time for an 'ever-closer union' in the EU at all levels is a thing of the past," the government said in a statement last week.

The two-day summit opening Thursday is showing some signs of change in the air that could benefit France.

After years of being dominated by the free-market, debt-cutting and austerity mantra to pull the continent out of recession, the summit will be looking at measures to ease unemployment with government support, even if the funds underpinning the initiative still look paltry compared with the task at hand.

"Where it was austerity and savings the past few years, we will see at the summit much attention for jobs for youngsters and growth stimuli," said Vos.

Perhaps Hollande should take heart that the pendulum is slowly swinging back.

7 aboard US schooner missing in South Pacific

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) ? A New Zealand meteorologist took the last known calls from the seven people aboard an American schooner: "The weather's turned nasty, how do we get away from it?"

The phone calls and texts ended June 4. More than three weeks later, searchers said Thursday they have grave concerns for the crew on the classic 85-year-old wooden vessel that went missing while sailing from New Zealand to Australia. Attempts to contact the crew by radio and an aerial search this week have proved fruitless.

Authorities say the skipper of the 70-foot (21-meter) vessel Nina is American David Dyche. They say there are two other American men and three American women aboard, aged between 17 and 73. Also aboard is a British man, aged 35.

Messages posted online by friends indicate the boat originally left from Panama City, Florida.

Meteorologist Bob McDavitt said he took a satellite phone call from the boat June 3. A woman named Evi asked how to get away from the weather. He said to call back in 30 minutes after he'd studied a forecast. She did.

"She was quite controlled in her voice, it sounded like everything was under control," McDavitt said, adding that the call itself indicated she was concerned about the conditions.

McDavitt said he spoke only briefly to Evi, advising her to head south and to brace for a storm with strong winds and high seas. The next day he got a text, the last known communication from the boat: "ANY UPDATE 4 NINA? ... EVI"

McDavitt said he advised the crew to stay put and ride out the storm another day. He continued sending messages the next few days but didn't hear back. Friends of the crew got in touch with McDavitt soon after that, and then alerted authorities June 14.

Kevin Banaghan, who is spearheading search efforts by Maritime New Zealand's Rescue Coordination Centre, said rescuers weren't worried at first because there had been no distress call from the boat and its emergency locator beacon had not been activated. He said rescuers on June 14 initiated a communications search, in which they tried contacting the boat over various radio frequencies as well as contacting other vessels in the area to see if they'd spotted the Nina.

This week, he said, rescuers escalated their efforts. An Air Force plane on Tuesday searched the area where the boat went missing. A second search by the plane on Wednesday went as far as the Australian coast but again turned up nothing. Banaghan said searchers are considering their next options.

The boat left the Bay of Islands in northern New Zealand on May 29 bound for the port of Newcastle, near Sydney. The last communication was from 370 nautical miles west of New Zealand.

Banaghan said the crew hoped to arrive in Australia mid-June but that, given the conditions, he considered a realistic arrival date to be about June 25. He said Dyche is a qualified captain and the crew has varying degrees of experience.

"We're very concerned for their safety and wellbeing," he said.

Authorities say the storm three weeks ago saw winds gusting up to 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour and waves of up to 8 meters (26 feet).

Banaghan said the Nina is a "lovely old craft" which won races when it was new and had been maintained in excellent condition. He added that it had a new engine installed in recent months which had apparently created some initial leaking problems.

He said there are several possible scenarios, including the boat losing communications, drifting off course, or the crew taking to lifeboats. He said there's also a possibility the boat suffered a catastrophic failure and sank before anybody had time to react.

Saudi says 'cannot be silent' at Iran, Hezbollah involvement in Syria

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia regards the involvement of Iran and Hezbollah in Syria's civil war as dangerous and believes the rebels must be offered military aid to defend themselves, the kingdom's foreign minister said on Tuesday.

Speaking at a news conference with U.S. Secretary John Kerry in Jeddah, Prince Saud al-Faisal added that Saudi Arabia "cannot be silent" about Iranian intervention and called for a resolution to ban arms flows to the Syrian government.

"The kingdom calls for issuing an unequivocal international resolution to halt the provision of arms to the Syrian regime and states the illegitimacy of the regime," Prince Saud said.

More than 93,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict, which began as a popular protest movement against President Bashar al-Assad but has descended into a civil war with sectarian overtones.

Nearly 1.7 million refugees have fled into neighboring countries, including Lebanon, where clashes between armed groups supporting opposing sides in Syria have fuelled fears of a lapse back into sectarian civil war.

News in Brief: Some infertile men have heightened cancer risk

Those who don?t make sperm are more apt to develop malignancy

By Nathan Seppa

Web edition: June 21, 2013

Men who don?t produce sperm face nearly three times the risk of cancer compared with the male population average, researchers report June 20 in Fertility and Sterility.

About 4 million men in the United States are infertile, with a host of causes. Of them, about 600,000 men don?t deliver sperm from the testes to the semen at all.

Michael Eisenberg of Stanford University and his colleagues studied the medical records of Texas men who had visited a male health clinic between 1989 and 2009. The men averaged 36 years old when they were examined. Of 2,238 men found to be infertile, about one-fifth didn?t have any sperm in their semen.

Over an average follow-up time of 6.7 years, 10 of the 451 men who didn?t make sperm developed some kind of cancer, making them 2.9 times as likely as similar-aged men in the general Texas population to be diagnosed with cancer. The reason is unclear, the authors say. Men who were infertile for other reasons didn?t face an increased risk of cancer.?

Lindau 2013: Videos with a personality, flow and message

After learning about the Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau through an online science video collection, Edson Filho will now be behind the camera making films himself as a video blogger at this year?s meeting. His path to this point ? like his research in sport and exercise psychology ? can be summed up in a word: unconventional.

Edson Filho

Edson Filho

Like his playmates in Belo Horizonte, a city teeming with skyscrapers in southeastern Brazil, Filho grew up practicing footwork on soccer fields. By age 17, after years of competitive sports, Filho knew he would not be the next Pel?, one of Brazil?s most famous players. He applied for and received a Fulbright doctoral fellowship to study socio-cognition and group dynamics in sports at Florida State University in Tallahassee. His final dissertation defense paid off handsomely: he won the American Psychological Association?s dissertation award in 2012 in exercise and sport psychology. ?I was bold and I am proud of that,? Edson told me in an emailed interview.

Filho pursued a coveted slot at the Lindau meeting with similar audacity. One day he stumbled upon GEOSET, a collection of video presentations made by top researchers, and sponsored in part by the Kroto Research Initiative. Edson boldly emailed Sir Harold Kroto asking for a recommendation letter to attend the 63rd Nobel Laureate Meeting in Lindau. (Kroto and colleagues won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1996.) Once again, Filho was rewarded for his courage.

Filho took time away from his busy schedule as a post-doctoral fellow in neuroscience and psychophysicology at the University of Chieti in Pescara, Italy, to discuss videos and science in an emailed interview.

Your video blog theme is ?Connect!? and builds upon the idea that a global network among researchers is important to modern science. Why is this network important now more than in the past?

Many people think that ?social capital? is the most valuable skill to possess. However, when I think of the topic ?Connect,? I don?t think in social terms only. I think about cognitive and applied implications as well. Connecting new ideas is especially important nowadays, and one also needs to learn about applied guidelines, such as ?how? and ?why? should I connect to new people and new domains?

What are three qualities a video must have to reach a wide audience?

1. ?Personality.? A video does not need to be the best in everything (sound, editing, resources) but a good video needs to have something special and unique. It is like a person ? some are pleasant, some are funny, and some are smart.

2. ?A take-home message.? A memorable movie typically has a good message. I always think of ?The Matrix.? While I liked the fancy effects, the symbolic message behind the movie was?? brilliant. I enjoy movies where I learn something. And when you learn something you remember it, the message sticks with you, and you create a lasting memory.

3. ?Flow.? Good books, friendships, music, etc., all have fluidity and a level of continuity. I do not mean to suggest that it has to be a linear relationship, but quality video needs to have connecting links, or at least a context. So you look at it and think ?Ok, I think that?s what is going to happen next? or ?Ok, there is no linear message but there is a context here?. Think of arts?the Greek people or Dali?there are connection links, context, or both.

What is your secret for getting researchers to talk with you on camera?

I think it is important to ask questions that the researchers are interested in, specifically questions they feel genuinely passionate about. I also think it is important to show interest and offer options? If they can?t speak with you now, that?s fair enough? but make yourself available for future conversations (?Can we do it tomorrow? I would really appreciate your input.?). Excellence involves passion and resilience.

When you are filming, what is mantra you have?

Embrace.

Describe a memory ? that has not yet happened, of course ? that you hope to take away from the Lindau meeting.

I would like to be inspired by the most humble Laureates.? These individuals changed the world. Thanks to their innovative research and ideas, we have nanotechnology, penicillin, and there is no more war in certain places (peace winners). Despite these great achievements, I anticipate that the Laureates will be way more humble than many academics. It is like that quote that says ?the more they know, the more they know that they don?t know?? I would like to keep this memory so I remain humble and down to earth despite any successes and failures along the way.

Note: Before you see Filho?s videos, see him in this 2011 on-camera interview on ?The Good News,? a show produced by the broadcast channel ABC 27 in Florida.

Alzheimer's disease protein controls movement in mice

June 21, 2013 ? Researchers in Berlin and Munich, Germany and Oxford, United Kingdom, have revealed that a protein well known for its role in Alzheimer's disease controls spindle development in muscle and leads to impaired movement in mice when the protein is absent or treated with inhibitors. The results, which are published in The EMBO Journal, suggest that drugs under development to target the beta-secretase-1 protein, which may be potential treatments for Alzheimer's disease, might produce unwanted side effects related to defective movement.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia found in older adults. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 18 million people worldwide have Alzheimer's disease. The number of people affected by the disease may increase to 34 million by 2025. Scientists know that the protein beta-secretase-1 or Bace1, a protease enzyme that breaks down proteins into smaller molecules, is involved in Alzheimer's disease. Bace1 cleaves the amyloid precursor protein and generates the damaging Abeta peptides that accumulate as plaques in the brain leading to disease. Now scientists have revealed in more detail how Bace1 works.

"Our results show that mice that lack Bace1 proteins or are treated with inhibitors of the enzyme have difficulties in coordination and walking and also show reduced muscle strength," remarked Carmen Birchmeier, one of the authors of the paper, Professor at the Max-Delbr?ck-Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany, and an EMBO Member. "In addition, we were able to show that the combined activities of Bace1 and another protein, neuregulin-1 or Nrg1, are needed to sustain the muscle spindles in mice and to maintain motor coordination."

Muscle spindles are sensory organs that are found throughout the muscles of vertebrates. They are able to detect how muscles stretch and convey the perception of body position to the brain. The researchers used genetic analyses, biochemical studies and interference with pharmacological inhibitors to investigate how Bace1 works in mice. "If the signal strength of a specific form of neuregulin-1 known as IgNrg1 is gradually reduced, increasingly severe defects in the formation and maturation of muscle spindles are observed in mice. Furthermore, it appears that Bace1 is required for full IgNrg1 activity. The graded loss of IgNrg1 activity results in the animals having increasing difficulties with movement and coordination," says Cyril Cheret, the first author of the work.

Drug developers are interested in stopping the Bace1 protein in its tracks because it represents a promising route to treat Alzheimer's disease. If the protein were inhibited, it would interfere with the generation of the smaller damaging proteins that accumulate in the brain as amyloid plaques and would therefore provide some level of protection from the effects of the disease. "Our data indicate that one unwanted side effect of the long-term inhibition of Bace1 might be the disruption of muscle spindle formation and impairment of movement. This finding is relevant to scientists looking for ways to develop drugs that target the Bace1 protein and should be considered," says Birchmeier. Several Bace1 inhibitors are currently being tested in phase II and phase III clinical trials for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

(AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? A Justice Department lawyer urged a judge Thursday to find that Apple Inc. conspired with publishers in 2010 to raise electronic book prices, while an attorney for the computer giant warned that such a finding in the civil antitrust case would set a "dangerous precedent" for businesses.

Justice Department lawyer Mark Ryan said the government had proven overwhelmingly through testimony and evidence offered at a three-week trial in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that Apple conspired with publishers to boost e-book prices above the $9.99 bargain price that the Seattle-based Amazon.com had established for the most popular electronic books.

He said publishers were eager to force Amazon to raise prices when Apple approached them in December 2009, beginning talks to boost prices of many books to $12.99 and $14.99 over the next year.

"The publishers were unwilling to take Amazon on alone," Ryan told U.S. District Judge Denise Cote.

Ryan said the plan "succeeded quite well," with substantial price increases for e-books.

But Apple attorney Orin Snyder told Cote earlier that she would set a "dangerous precedent" if she concluded Apple manipulated e-book prices as it entered a market new to the company. He said Steve Jobs, the late founder of the Cupertino, Calif.-based corporation, had no interest in the e-books industry in mid-2009, when one of his top executives convinced him it would be worthwhile.

"Apple did not conspire with a single publisher to fix prices in the e-book industry," Snyder said. "Apple acted lawfully and did not violate the antitrust laws."

He asked Cote ? who had urged Apple before trial to settle ? to "take a fresh and open look" at the evidence, which included testimony from executives for Apple, publishers and Amazon.com.

"The government has overreached and now is asking this court to draw inferences and make factual findings that cannot be supported," Snyder said.

Snyder said e-book competitor Barnes & Noble was acting in 2010 in a similar fashion as Apple to compete with Amazon because competitive forces in the industry required it.

After Snyder and Ryan finished their closing arguments, the judge asked Ryan how he would react to Snyder's characterization of Barnes & Noble's dealings with publishers.

"I don't think Barnes & Noble made a deal with publishers to raise prices substantially," the government lawyer said. "I'm not here to say that Barnes & Noble acted appropriately at all times. It's not a concern of Apple to say: 'Why didn't you sue somebody else?'"

The trial stemmed from an antitrust lawsuit that the government brought last year against Apple and major publishers. The government has reached settlements with five publishers.

Cote is expected to rule this year.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New Jersey's special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of Frank Lautenberg will go ahead this year as scheduled, after the state Supreme Court declined on Thursday to hear a legal challenge.

Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, ordered a special primary election on August 13 and a special general election to be held October 16 - three weeks before the regularly scheduled November election, when Christie himself is up for re-election.

Democrats accused Christie of making a political calculation, ensuring he would not appear on the same ballot as a race that might energize Democratic voters by authorizing a special election that will leave taxpayers with a $24 million tab.

In a one-page decision, Supreme Court Chief Justice Stuart Rabner denied the application by Somerset Democratic Chairwoman Peg Schaffer, who argued that Christie lacked the authority to set the October election.

Schaffer could not be reached immediately for comment.

Christie, a popular governor whose no-nonsense, in-your-face style has catapulted him to national prominence, is widely seen as a strong contender for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

The governor appointed Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa, also a Republican, to fill the seat in the interim. Chiesa promised not to compete in the special election.

Lautenberg, a Democrat who was first elected senator in 1982, died on June 3 at age 89 of complications from viral pneumonia.

Cory Booker, the Democratic mayor of Newark, leads early polls. His Democratic challengers include U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone, U.S. Congressman Rush Holt, State Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver.

Steve Lonegan, a conservative activist who four years ago lost to Christie in the Republican primary for governor, is running for the Republican nomination against Dr. Alieta Eck, a physician in private practice.

Backlash grows against Brazilian protests after violence

By Brian Winter and Silvio Cascione

SAO PAULO (Reuters) - A popular backlash against Brazil's nationwide protests took hold on Friday after widespread rioting overnight, as even the leftist group at the movement's core said it was done organizing marches for now because of growing discord and violence.

President Dilma Rousseff was meeting with top aides on Friday morning to figure out how to respond after more than 1 million Brazilians in over 100 cities took to the streets.

The protests blossomed over the past week, catching Rousseff and other politicians off guard as Brazilians vented anger over issues from corruption and poor public transport to billions of dollars being spent to host the soccer World Cup next year.

The marches have contributed to a selloff in Brazilian financial markets and deeply embarrassed the country as it hosts the Confederations Cup, a warm-up tournament for the World Cup taking place in several cities hit by the protests. TV images have shown terrified fans and tourists running past clashes between police and demonstrators to get to stadiums.

World soccer body FIFA said on Friday it condemned the violence, but had not considered cancelling the tournament.

Most of the demonstrators have been peaceful. But social media buzzed on Friday with condemnations of violence after widespread scenes of masked youths looting stores, setting fires and defacing buildings including the foreign ministry in Brasilia, which had its windows smashed.

The Free Fare Movement in Sao Paulo, an activist group that was instrumental in the rise of the protests, said it would stop organizing new demonstrations for now after street fights broke out among some protesters with different objectives and political views on Thursday.

Douglas Belome, a bank teller and member of the Free Fare group, said things turned ugly when some protesters sought to prevent left-wing political parties from waving their flags.

"At least for now, there are no new demonstrations scheduled," he told Reuters, expressing regret for the violence.

The group's decision will not totally halt the protests, since the movement has taken on a life of its own on social media and grown to include a wide range of grievances and groups. Other, smaller protests were still scheduled for Friday around Brazil.

Unlike previous demonstrations, much of the violence on Thursday was generated by the protesters themselves, rather than a heavy-handed police response.

Dozens were injured across the country on Thursday night, including 62 people in Rio de Janeiro, according to city officials. One person was killed in the interior of Sao Paulo state after someone drove a car into a group of protesters.

"I support these (protests), but I think it's out of control," said Nilson Chabat, a 31-year-old gas station attendant on his way to work on Friday in Sao Paulo. "Many of us are angry but you can't just go make a mess every day."

FRUSTRATION WITH STATUS QUO

The sudden unrest, which started on June 13 when police cracked down on a small demonstration over rising bus and subway fares in Sao Paulo organized by the Free Fare Movement, has shocked a country that until recently was considered a successful emerging-market power on the rise.

Polls show that most Brazilians remain happy with Rousseff and with an economy that has slowed recently but has still been able to keep unemployment at record lows. Unlike recent youth protesters in the Arab world, the demonstrators are not trying to bring down the government, and Brazil's robust democracy appears able to address some of their complaints.

Yet the protests have revealed clear frustration with the status quo. Brazil has some of Latin America's highest taxes but one of the lowest rates of public investment, leaving many Brazilians frustrated with subpar schools, hospitals, infrastructure and police forces.

It's unclear what Rousseff can do in the short term, apart from making a general appeal for calm. Mayors of several cities already tried to yield to one of the protesters' main demands this week by rolling back a recent hike in bus and subway fares, but the demonstrations only grew.

Rousseff, a leftist guerrilla in the 1970s, has expressed solidarity with the protesters' aims and has appeared hesitant to order a crackdown that could just make the crowds even angrier.

But she is also at risk of having her probable re-election bid next year complicated by both the growing unrest and the backlash against the scenes of violence.

Some think she is already tardy in her response.

Fernando Rodrigues, a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo newspaper, wrote that Rousseff's silence on Thursday night "sums up the lack of action by politicians."

"They seem, in essence, to be only rooting for the tsunami to pass," he said.
