Thousands touched by photograph of New York cop helping shoeless man

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A photograph of a New York City police officer crouching by a shoeless panhandler to give him a new pair of boots on a cold night in Times Square has drawn a deluge of praise after it was published on the police department's Facebook page this week.

By Thursday afternoon, nearly 394,000 people had clicked a button on the department's Facebook page to indicate that they "liked" the photograph. Tens of thousands left comments, most praising Officer Lawrence DePrimo for his charitable deed.

The photograph was snapped by Jennifer Foster, an employee of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office in Florence, Arizona, during a trip to New York this month, according to police.

She took the picture shortly after she noticed the man asking passersby for money.

"Right when I was about to approach, one of your officers came up behind him," Foster wrote in an email to the New York Police Department accompanying the snapshot, according to the picture caption on the department's Facebook page. She said she was some distance away, and the officer did not know he was being photographed.

"The officer said, ?I have these size 12 boots for you, they are all-weather. Let's put them on and take care of you.' The officer squatted down on the ground and proceeded to put socks and the new boots on this man."

DePrimo and Foster could not be reached for comment on Thursday, and the police department did not respond to queries about the photograph.

DePrimo, 25, joined the force in 2010 and lives with his parents on Long Island, according to The New York Times. He paid $75 for the boots from a nearby Skechers store after an employee there gave him a 25 percent discount upon learning they were to be donated to a man in need.

"I wish more cops were like this guy," one person wrote on the department's Facebook page. Others suggested there were plenty of good-hearted police officers about, even if their good deeds were not photographed or touted on Facebook.

How infidelity helps nieces and nephews

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

A University of Utah study produced new mathematical support for a theory that explains why men in some cultures often feed and care for their sisters' children: where extramarital sex is common and accepted, a man's genes are more likely to be passed on by their sister's kids than by their wife's kids.

The theory previously was believed valid only if a man was likely to be the biological father of less than one in four of his wife's children ? a number that anthropologists found improbably low.

But in the new study, University of Utah anthropology Professor Alan Rogers shows mathematically that if certain assumptions in the theory are made less stringent and more realistic, that ratio changes from one in four to one in two, so the theory works more easily.

In other words, a man's genes are more likely to be passed by his sisters' children if fewer than half of his wife's kids are biologically his ? rather than the old requirement that he had to sire fewer than a quarter of his wife's kids, according to the study published online Nov. 28 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

"Imagine a mutation that encourages its bearers, if they are men, to be helpful and invest resources in the children of their sisters," Rogers says. "If that man lives in a society where most of his wife's children were fathered by other men, then this gene may not be in many of his wife's children. A man really doesn't know if any of his wife's kids were fathered by him, but he knows he and his sister have the same mom. So this gene may, in fact, be in more of his sisters' children."

"Thus, over time, the frequency of this gene increases because men are increasing the survival and fitness of their sisters' children ? the ones more likely to carry the gene," he adds.

The new study "shows that it is much easier than we thought for your niece to be a closer relative than your wife's daughter," Rogers says.

The research was funded by the University of Utah.

Why Men Help their Sisters' Kids: Theory and Debate

"Men invest in children in many ways; they care for them, feed them and leave them resources when the men die," Roger says. "But in some human societies, these are the children of sisters rather than those of wives. For decades, anthropologists have wondered why."

Extramarital mating is common in some cultures, including in central Africa and South America, he says, but not in the U.S. or other Western societies where infidelity, as prevalent as seems, much is less common by comparison.

"In some societies it is expected; it isn't seen as cheating," Rogers says. "And it isn't really just about promiscuity. Even where extramarital sex isn't common, women get divorced and remarried and have households with offspring from several men."

Rogers says: "In many societies where extramarital mating is the norm, men may not share genes with the children of wives. There is less doubt about relatedness to sisters' children. This suggests an interesting hypothesis: perhaps natural selection has shaped this practice, by encouraging males to direct investment toward genetic relatives."

"There was great enthusiasm for this idea during the 1970s, until a problem came to light," he continues. "Simple calculations suggested that the explanation collapses unless men father fewer than about one in four of their wife's children. Many have doubted that the number ? the paternity threshold number ? could really be this low."

Rogers' new study shows it is much easier than that for the idea to be true ? for natural selection to favor men who help their sisters' kids. He shows the theory holds true if men father fewer than half their wife's kids rather than fewer than one-quarter of those kids ? something much more likely to happen in reality.

The study shows this mathematically by relaxing assumptions previously made as part of the uncle-caretaker theory.

Rogers says it isn't enough to take into account the probability of paternity ? the odds that a child's biological father also is his mother's husband. The new study shows that if the assumptions made in old studies are relaxed, another parameter also must be measured: "the probability a brother and sister had the same biological father. The higher that probability, the more closely related a man is to his sister and his sister's kids."

Making Old Assumptions More Realistic

Rogers examined four assumptions made in previous studies and changed them to be more realistic. In this more realistic theory, men are more likely to share genes with their sister's children than under the old theory.

The first two assumptions of the existing theory were that "women are equally receptive to extramarital affairs and that each has an infinite number of paramours," says Rogers. "These assumptions both lower estimates of relatedness between men and the children of their sisters. Relaxing either assumption increases our estimate of the fitness payoff to men who invest in children of sisters."

[Rogers notes the theory applies to a man's sisters' children, but not to his brothers' children "because your brother has no more confidence than you do about the paternity of his wife's children. Sisters are a better bet, because they know who their kids are."]

"Previous calculations assume every woman in the population is equally promiscuous," Rogers says. "If you relax that assumption and instead assume some women are more promiscuous than others, it means men are more likely to share genes with their sisters' children."

"The earlier theory also assumed women each woman had an infinite number of boyfriends," instead of a range from one to infinity, he adds. "It made the math simple ? and it gave you a wrong answer."

The new study showed mathematically that a man's relatedness to his sister's kids increases if his wife has fewer rather than more extramarital partners and if she allocates sex ? and thus having children ? unevenly among them.

A third problem with previous studies is that they assumed resources given to any child were equally valuable. Rogers says that didn't account for the fact that giving your wife's kids twice as many resources isn't necessarily twice as good ? once the kids have what they need ? but may be only half again as good for them. So the man may be better off also giving resources to his sisters' kids.

"The old model didn't account for that, and because of that, it biased things in favor of the wife's children. When the nieces and nephews share fewer genes, they end up getting zero resources rather than some reduced share, as they should."

The fourth problem with most previous calculations was that they didn't account for a simple reality: "The best thing for a man to do depends on how his wife is going to respond," Rogers says. "If wives punish their husbands one way or another for delivering goods to their nieces and nephews, it's not just the husband deciding what is best for the husband. Women have an active role in all of these decisions and that role was ignored in the previous model."

Another study published recently took that into account, making it easier to understand how natural selection might favor men who invest in their sisters' offspring.

Rogers believes that natural selection and genetics ultimately contributes to people helping their relatives in most cultures, even if the primary motivation may be tax breaks for those who provide cash gifts to relatives rather than passing on one's genes.

"People are nice to relatives all over the world, and I think selection has something to do with that," he says.

APNewsBreak: Senators ask Obama to protect river

(AP) ? A group of U.S. senators is asking President Barack Obama for an emergency declaration in an effort to keep barges moving on the drought-stricken Mississippi River.

A spokesman for Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., told the Associated Press that senators from Mississippi River states are seeking a directive that would increase the flow of water from a dam on the upper Missouri River, which flows into the Mississippi. They also want faster removal of rock formations on the Mississippi that impede barge traffic when water is low.

The Army Corps of Engineers began reducing the outflow from an upper Missouri River dam in South Dakota on Friday.

Shippers say the already-low Mississippi River could get so low that barge traffic will be severely restricted or even halted by mid-December.

On patrol with a shark ranger in Indonesia - US - MSNBC.com

Conservation International works with Indonesian children to help them learn how to protect the most diverse underwater region in the world. ?NBC News' Richard Engel reports.

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

RAJA AMPAT, Indonesia ? The remote Indonesian archipelago of Raja Ampat is home to an underwater treasure trove of coral reefs and tremendous biodiversity, miles away from polluted urban centers and human encroachment.

The faraway islands in Western Papua, regarded by many marine experts as having the potential to help restore the world's ailing coral reefs, are vulnerable to the unchecked exploitation of a lucrative treasure that is rapidly disappearing from Indonesia's waters: sharks.

China's growing appetite for the de rigueur shark fin soup has attracted fishermen from elsewhere in Indonesia and Southeast Asia to the waters around Raja Ampat's 1,500 islands.

Alarmed, conservationists and local villagers worked together to create the Misool Eco Resort and Conservation Center in 2005, establishing a 165-square-mile?"No-Take Zone"?that banned fishing.

When a neighboring village requested to take part, the area was expanded to 472 square miles, roughly the size of the city of Los Angeles.

The Misool team also recruited a group of rangers to help patrol the waters for illegal fishermen. Earlier this year, NBC News had an opportunity to go on patrol with Abdul Razak Tamher, 31, one of the first rangers.

Q: Before 2005, what were shark and fish stocks like in this area of Raja Ampat?

A: Before 2005, one of the main occupations of the people of my village was fishing. That's what we did every day and one of the big things fished were sharks. By the 2000s there were very few sharks left in the area, but in the 1980s and 90s when I was fishing there were lots of sharks. A lot of people used dynamite and potassium cyanide for fishing.

Q: So did villagers in Misool know they had to change the way things were done?

A: At that time, people here really didn't think much about shark or marine conservation. We didn't know shark fishing was illegal (prior to the formation of the No-Take Zone in 2005, the local governor had actually signed a law against shark fishing) because nobody from the government came out here to tell or educate us that it was illegal and bad for the ecology to fish sharks.

It was really through the efforts of the resort to educate the village about the importance of sharks and protecting the marine environment that we saw the importance of it and began to appreciate the natural beauty ourselves. Now if people from my village hear of a shark fishing boat coming into this area, they get really upset.

NBC News' Richard Engel talks to a Conservation International scientist as he identifies a new species of fish.

Q: Is conservation a completely foreign idea here? Isn't there a long tradition of seasonal fishing and spiritual beliefs around protecting certain animals?

A:?We've embraced principles of conservation since the beginning of our culture. They were simple ideas, but they still worked for us. For example, we would harvest clams from the ocean for six months, then depending on the ocean conditions, we would close that area for sometimes up to a year before harvesting again.

Many of the original families in this area are forbidden to eat different sea creatures like sharks or turtles or other kinds of fish. In each case, there is a reason why each family respects and protects a certain animal. It could be that a family member or fisherman generations ago was rescued by that species or guided to land at a time of need. Many still believe that if someone in the family breaks this taboo, they will get sick or something bad will happen.

Q:?In 2006, the rangers were formed with just five of you and a few of you were actually former shark fishermen. What made you make such a dramatic change in your life?

?A:?I personally wasn't involved in shark fishing, but other original rangers that were here in the beginning and their village elders were shark fishermen. Even though they were shark fishermen and lived off the harvest of the ocean, they realized that they needed to preserve this area and the marine life for future generations to come.

Many of us felt ? and still feel today ? that if we told our children or grandchildren that there were lots of fish and sharks in the sea around these islands and they went there and saw none they would think that we were liars and we just couldn't allow that to happen.

Q:?What was it like in the early days with the rangers?

A:?The rangers weren't really effective until 2009 because at that time there was only one speed boat that was always busy getting lumber for the construction of the resort. So we would only go out if we saw an illegal boat go past the resort. From 2006-2009, we went out almost every day. In the months of June and July, the area was choked with shark finning boats from as far away as Java that cast long lines with sometimes 1,000 or 2,000 hooks to catch sharks.

To expel the foreign boats, it wasn't a problem. We would just go up to the boats and tell them leave and they would go. Local fishermen were tougher. Most of the problems had to do with local fishermen not agreeing with the contract we signed with Misool Eco Reserve to create the no-take zones or claiming they were not around when the contract had been reached. They would also say we have it easy since we work as rangers and make a lot of money, so we don't need to fish like they did.

Q:?How soon after the reserve formed did you start to see results from the sanctuary?

A:?After two or three years, I started to see a lot of sharks in the lagoons and my friends who went diving began to see more fish. There were just some researchers here in Misool who were shocked by the amount of fish who were in the protected areas. The results have just been amazing.

Q:?How have the villages in the area adapted to the sanctuary?

A:?In the beginning, there were a lot of problems with the villagers not understanding the rangers' mission. The most important thing we did to get people behind us was to use Adat, or traditional Papuan village law. This was done by developing a close relationship with the ancestral village head, as he holds the power of the village and so people will listen to what he says. If we didn't have the village head, then it would have been difficult to enforce the rules of the sanctuary.

Q:?What's next for the rangers in the coming years?

A:?We all hope the ranger patrol can continue forever and that we have the resources to keep recruiting young people from the villages to the patrol. We now have three ranger stations built and we hope to have three rangers in every station with small, fuel-efficient boats that can be used to spot illegal fishermen and intercept them until support can show up.

The other big problem we'd like to fix is communication. Radio communication in this region of Raja Ampat is difficult because all the radios we have now are line-of-sight and the islands interfere with signal within short distances. The plan is to build a main radio/repeater station that will cover the entire area so that there is clear contact throughout the sanctuary.

Technology can help a job search

While the basics of job search remain the same, new technology has improved the effectiveness of those basics and has greatly improved the ease of which they are executed.

The basics, of course, include finding employers that hire your skills and getting those employers to know you; or at least to know of you. Networking has always been the most effective way to accomplish job search and will likely remain so into the foreseeable future.

Here are three things you can do to utilize new technology to get a job:

? Expand your relationships on as many social networking websites as you can effectively manage. Start with Facebook and LinkedIn and add others as you can. Create complete personal profiles on each of these sites. Get as many ?connections? or ?friends? as you can. If you have the know-how, create a professional website of your own, highlighting your skills.

? If you have a smartphone, download apps that are specifically designed for job search and connecting with employers. These include apps such as CareerBliss, BusyBee and Real-Time Jobs, all offered free of charge. You can search for other apps that may be useful.

? Avoid spending too much time searching for advertised jobs. Many jobs are filled before they are advertised, and the general rule is that the better the job, the less likely it will be advertised. Instead, use social media to focus on finding and developing relationships with companies that hire your skills.

Again, these techniques are not new, but new technology is changing how you go about executing them. Simply put, technology is creating innovative and more effective options to accomplish the same methods as has always worked: find employers that hire your skills and get those employers to know you, or at least to know of you.

Imagine, for a moment, what employers face when making a hiring decision. Especially in today?s struggling job market for job seekers, employers are inundated with scores or even hundreds of applications, r?sum?s and cover letters.

Most employers would welcome a strong recommendation from someone they know and trust rather than to make hiring decisions solely on their own.

By using social media websites, you can expand your network and improve your connections to employers that hire your skills.

Remember that potential employers will likely review at least your Facebook and your LinkedIn profiles. If you use Twitter, they will also likely review what you have tweeted in the past few months or even years.

Our social media presence has become more of a representation of our image than ever before, either good or bad. If you want a professional image, your Facebook posts and your Twitter tweets need to be professional. If you want to look professional, be professional in all you do. For each and every item you post or tweet, ask yourself how potential employers would view it.

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace. Learning to use it in your job search will greatly improve your chance of finding that right employer that is willing to offer you that right job, which, in today?s job market, is critically important.

Football: Jon Embree appeals to CU Buffs' sense of pride

Ellen Brown has been rooting for the Colorado football program for three decades and like many Buffs fans these days, it hurts her to see the program's steep decline.

Brown thinks she can help coach Jon Embree and his staff finish the season strong. She recently contacted the Buffs' second-year coach and offered to lead the team in a laughter yoga session before either of the final two home games. The Buffs host Washington Saturday (11:35 a.m., FX) and Utah next Friday.

Brown says laughter yoga releases "a cocktail of hormones and chemicals" that do the body good and help establish a positive frame of mind.

"I feel in my heart this could be the key to a "W," Brown wrote in a letter to Embree and the Daily Camera.

Yes, it sounds so Boulder.

But let's be honest, could it hurt at this point?

The Buffs are mired in perhaps their most woeful stretch of losses in history.

A month ago they allowed Southern Cal to set a school record with seven touchdown passes in a game. Three weeks ago, Oregon scored 70 points and could have scored 100 or more if it didn't remove its starters. Two weeks ago, Stanford shut out the Buffs at home for the first time in 26 seasons and last week CU allowed an Arizona running back to have a historic rushing performance.

CU is 1-9 overall and 1-6 in Pac-12 Conference play and in danger of producing the first winless season in history at Folsom Field. The last time the Buffs went winless at home was 1920 when they played home games at Gamble Field.

Last season's team faced the same possibility and rallied around a large senior class to win on senior day. With this season's eight-member senior class being the second smallest in the modern history of the program, Embree said a win or two in the final two weeks would be a nice boost into 2013."I talked to the older guys, the seniors, about how they want to finish and how it relates to them," Embree said. "It would be big, we

Washington's Bishop Sankey (25) has amassed 1,011 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns this fall. ( Elaine Thompson )

talked about those things on Monday and we will continue to talk about it all week, just about what these two games mean, just to everybody on this team and this program." Saturday's game has been viewed as one of the most winnable on the schedule during the past month because Washington has struggled at times this season under fourth-year head coach Steve Sarkisian. But the Huskies are suddenly playing their best football just in time for the trip to Boulder. They have won three straight and are once again heading to the postseason, a seemingly magical place CU hasn't visited since 2007.

Regardless of how it is viewed by hopeful Buffs fans, the Huskies (6-4, 4-3) are 201/2-point favorites. It is the most points by which the Washington program has been favored on the road since 1997, according to the Seattle Times.

Washington sophomore tailback Bishop Sankey had to be smiling all week knowing he gets to run against the Buffs Saturday. Why wouldn't he be excited? Last week CU allowed Arizona running back Ka'Deem Carey to rush for a Pac-12 Conference record 366 yards and five touchdowns. That kind of defensive performance has to have running backs on next season's schedule already salivating.

Sankey is a tough runner who already has amassed 1,011 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns this fall.

Colorado hopes to run effectively again today with freshmen Christian Powell and Donta Abron leading the way. Powell is in the midst of one of the best freshman seasons by a running back in Colorado history and is within reach of establishing a new freshman rushing record if he has two strong outings this week and next.

The Buffs must run the ball effectively against the 90th ranked rushing defense in the nation Saturday because sophomore Connor Wood is starting at quarterback against a stingy and opportunistic Washington pass defense ranked 18th in the nation. However, Washington's defensive line is thin and Sarkisian has prepared tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins and offensive lineman Shane Brostek to play on the defensive line if needed. Wood has played in parts of six games this season, mostly in mop-up duty. He has thrown two interceptions and one touchdown pass. Junior Jordan Webb, who started the first nine games, is expected to serve as the backup with last week's starter, Nick Hirschman, still recovering from a concussion.

"I talked to the defense about pride, and that no matter how much they think about or wish or go over it, it isn't going to change what happened on (last) Saturday, but they have an opportunity these next two weeks," Embree said. "I appealed to their pride. Offensively, I talked about humility. We have played pretty good three out of the four weeks, but it hasn't translated to wins and there are some things that we need to fix. So don't think you have arrived and relax. That was my message to the team, when I spoke to both sides of the football."

We'll find out how Embree's messages were received and if he might need to get outside his comfort zone to coax a win from his team. Maybe that means laughter yoga. Maybe not.

Are You at Risk Of Hypertension? Find Out | Health Blog

Hypertension or high blood pressure (systolic 140 mmHg or higher and diastolic 90 mmHg or higher is hypertension) can lead to several complications. It is important to know if you have high blood pressure (check your blood pressure from your doctor, nurse or other health care providers) and to know if you are at risk of high blood pressure. Complications of hypertension can be serious and life threatening and it is important to control blood pressure (if you have hypertension) within normal limit so that complications can be avoided and prevented.

The risk factors of hypertension are given below and find out how many risk factors you have. The more risk factors of high blood pressure you have the greater is the risk of developing hypertension (and complications as a result) for you. Some of the risk factors are modifiable and some are non-modifiable. However, one may have high blood pressure without having any risk factors mentioned below.

Non-modifiable risk factors of hypertension:

  • Age: The risk of hypertension increases with age. Unfortunately, we can do nothing about it. For females, the risk is greater after menopause.
  • Family history: Hypertension can run in families.
  • Race: Hypertension is more common in certain races, e.g. hypertension is more common among blacks than whites of similar age and sex and complications are also more common.
  • Pregnancy: This can lead to hypertension. In most of this cases blood pressure comes down to normal after delivery, but the risk of hypertension in future increases.

Modifiable risk factors of hypertension:

  • Obesity: Obese individuals are at greater risk of developing hypertension than normal body weight individuals. The greater your body weight the greater is the requirement of oxygen and blood volume increases, which results in high blood pressure.
  • Physical inactivity: Physical inactivity is one of the important risk factors of hypertension. Physical inactivity can lead to obesity, which itself is a risk factor.
  • Too much salt (sodium) in your diet: Excess salt (sodium) intake leads to retention of water in body, which increases blood volume and lead to high blood pressure. This is the reason doctors prescribe low salt diet for management of hypertension.
  • Too little potassium in diet: Adequate potassium is essential to maintain sodium balance. Too little potassium can lead to excess sodium and hypertension.
  • Tobacco use: Use of tobacco can raise blood pressure immediately temporarily. Use of tobacco reduces elasticity of walls of arteries and damage artery walls. This lead to narrowing of arteries and blood pressure increases.
  • Drinking too much alcohol: Drinking too much alcohol can damage the heart. But, moderate drinking (2 drinks a day) can be helpful to control blood pressure.
  • Mental stress: Mental stress can increase blood pressure temporarily and which may become permanent feature. Do not use commonly used relaxation techniques such as having a cigarette or eating. Use relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga etc.
  • Certain chronic medical conditions: There are several chronic medical disorders which increase risk of development of hypertension, such as diabetes, kidney disorders etc.

If you have the above-mentioned risk factors, you are at risk of developing hypertension. Be careful and take preventive measures to prevent development of hypertension.

Keep that moustache trim ? and benefit cancer research at the same time

Carol Chapman doesn?t want to see any of the Movember moustaches around town unkempt.

That?s because Chapman?s A Cut Above salon, dubbed the ?official moustache trimmers? is offering free grooming to all men who have grown a ?stache for Movember ? a movement to support prostate cancer awareness and research.

?We have all these guys running around town with moustaches, we want them to look nice, right,? Chapman said.

Men are welcome to drop in anytime until Nov. 30 to have their moustaches trimmed and sculpted at A Cut Above in the Campbell River Common mall.

At the end of the month, Chapman is also volunteering her time to get all those men clean-shaven once again at a special Movember bash. On Nov. 29, local realtor Byron Maier is throwing his third annual A Mo for the Bros gala at Moxie?s from 6-10 p.m. to raise money for prostate cancer research through a silent auction. Chapman will be on hand with her barber chair to shave off all the moustaches.

Moevember begins each year on Nov. 1 and throughout the month, normally clean-shaven men are encouraged to grow a moustache and raise funds for cancer research through sponsors. The campaign is also aimed at raising awareness and encouraging men to undergo routine prostate exams to ensure early detection. Maier got on board locally with Movember because of his father.

?My dad went through prostate cancer four years ago,? Maier said. ?He survived because he got checked.?

Maier said both men and women are invited to the Nov. 29 gala and he?s encouraging everyone who can to donate to the silent auction. Maier can be reached at byron@byronmaier.com

San Francisco nudists rally for right to bare it all

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Two dozen pro-nudity activists wearing little but their righteous indignation assembled on the steps of San Francisco City Hall on Wednesday to protest a proposed municipal ban on public nakedness.

"We are here today in response to an attack on our fundamental freedom, our freedom to be ourselves in our own city," disrobed rally organizer Gypsy Taub declared as her fellow activists displayed signs saying, "Nudity is Natural" and "Nude is not Lewd."

Local politicians in the famously tolerant city, where men in particular are known to frequently parade undressed through the streets of the predominantly gay Castro District, are considering a law to criminalize nudity on streets, sidewalks and plazas.

A hearing on measure by the city's Board of Supervisors is scheduled for next Tuesday.

Following the protest, attorney Christina DiEdoardo filed suit on behalf of the nudists seeking to block the proposed nudity ban from enactment.

She contends that a prohibition on public nakedness would deprive her five clients, one of them a former mayoral candidate who ran on a nudist platform, of their constitutional rights to free speech and equal protection under law.

"The city is getting into trying to legislate and criminally enforce a dress code," she told Reuters. "My clients are trying to save the Board of Supervisors from acting unconstitutionally."

"Nudophobic bigotry has now taken root here in San Francisco," Rusty Mills, 69, stripped down to his tanned birthday suit, told his fellow demonstrators as they stood in the sunshine of an unseasonably warm, 70-degree Fahrenheit (21-degree Celsius) fall day.

GRIN AND BEAR IT

The nude protesters, including one using a cane and another in a wheelchair, walked with DiEdoardo two blocks to the federal courthouse, where an officer refused to allow them to enter disrobed. DiEdoardo, who was fully clothed, went inside to file the court papers.

On the way back to City Hall, elementary school children playing on a schoolyard gawked and pointed at the naked demonstrators.

Supervisor Scott Wiener introduced the proposal to curb undressing after residents complained about a daily gathering of naked men in Jane Warner Plaza, a square in the Castro District. He called the lawsuit a baseless "publicity stunt."

"There's always been occasional public nudity in San Francisco. Over the last two years it's gone from being this quirky, occasional thing to an obnoxious, over-the-top thing," Wiener said in an interview.

"A lot of people who live in the neighborhood are just sick of the fact that seven days a week there are men taking their pants off and displaying their genitals on our sidewalks and plaza," he added.

Under the proposed law, which critics dubbed the "Wiener bill," nudity would still be allowed at permitted parades, fairs and festivals, as well as on designated nude beaches.

Violators would be fined up to $100 for a first offense and $200 for a second. Three-time offenders would face up to a year in jail and a $500 fine.

San Francisco last year began requiring nudists to cover their buttocks in public and to wear clothes in restaurants. Residents say the restrictions only incited the so-called Naked Guys to grow more exhibitionist.

During a hearing before a committee of supervisors last week, Taub, 43, extolled the benefits of going nude, then pulled her dress over her head, threw it on the floor and waved to the audience.

"We refuse to go back to the dark ages of body shame and sexual repression," she said, standing completely naked, except for socks and sandals, in front of a lectern. As a sheriff's deputy escorted her from the chamber, the nude mother of three screamed, "Long live body freedom."

Dan Glazer, owner of the Hot Cookie, a Castro bakery known for genital-shaped cookies, expressed mixed emotions about the proposed ban.

He said tourists flock to the area to see the Naked Guys and snap pictures, and probably have helped his business. He also said he would hate to see limited police resources used to enforce a nudity ban.

On the other hand, he said, the nudists have crossed the line into an irritating form of exhibitionism, and were "taking advantage of our neighborhood's openness, of the gay community's tolerance."

NASA rover providing new weather and radiation data about Mars

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Observations of wind patterns and natural radiation patterns on Mars by NASA's Curiosity rover are helping scientists better understand the environment on the Red Planet's surface.

Researchers using the car-sized mobile laboratory have identified transient whirlwinds, mapped winds in relation to slopes, tracked daily and seasonal changes in air pressure, and linked rhythmic changes in radiation to daily atmospheric changes. The knowledge being gained about these processes helps scientists interpret evidence about environmental changes on Mars that might have led to conditions favorable for life.

During the first 12 weeks after Curiosity landed in an area named Gale Crater, an international team of researchers analyzed data from more than 20 atmospheric events with at least one characteristic of a whirlwind recorded by the Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) instrument. Those characteristics can include a brief dip in air pressure, a change in wind direction, a change in wind speed, a rise in air temperature or a dip in ultraviolet light reaching the rover. Two of the events included all five characteristics.

In many regions of Mars, dust-devil tracks and shadows have been seen from orbit, but those visual clues have not been seen in Gale Crater. One possibility is that vortex whirlwinds arise at Gale without lifting as much dust as they do elsewhere.

"Dust in the atmosphere has a major role in shaping the climate on Mars," said Manuel de la Torre Juarez of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. He is the investigation scientist for REMS, which Spain provided for the mission. "The dust lifted by dust devils and dust storms warms the atmosphere."

Dominant wind direction identified by REMS has surprised some researchers who expected slope effects to produce north-south winds. The rover is just north of a mountain called Mount Sharp. If air movement up and down the mountain's slope governed wind direction, dominant winds generally would be north-south. However, east-west winds appear to predominate. The rim of Gale Crater may be a factor.

"With the crater rim slope to the north and Mount Sharp to the south, we may be seeing more of the wind blowing along the depression in between the two slopes, rather than up and down the slope of Mount Sharp," said Claire Newman, a REMS investigator at Ashima Research in Pasadena. "If we don't see a change in wind patterns as Curiosity heads up the slope of Mount Sharp -- that would be a surprise."

REMS monitoring of air pressure has tracked both a seasonal increase and a daily rhythm. Neither was unexpected, but the details improve understanding of atmospheric cycles on present-day Mars, which helps with estimating how the cycles may have operated in the past.

The seasonal increase results from tons of carbon dioxide, which had been frozen into a southern winter ice cap, returning into the atmosphere as southern spring turns to summer. The daily cycle of higher pressure in the morning and lower pressure in the evening results from daytime heating of the atmosphere by the sun. As morning works its way westward around the planet, so does a wave of heat-expanded atmosphere, known as a thermal tide.

Effects of that atmospheric tide show up in data from Curiosity's Radiation Assessment Detector (RAD). This instrument monitors high-energy radiation considered to be a health risk to astronauts and a factor in whether microbes could survive on Mars' surface.

"We see a definite pattern related to the daily thermal tides of the atmosphere," said RAD Principal Investigator Don Hassler of the Southwest Research Institute's Boulder, Colo., branch. "The atmosphere provides a level of shielding, and so charged-particle radiation is less when the atmosphere is thicker. Overall, Mars' atmosphere reduces the radiation dose compared to what we saw during the flight to Mars."

The overall goal of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission is to use 10 instruments on Curiosity to assess whether areas inside Gale Crater ever offered a habitable environment for microbes.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the project for NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington, and built Curiosity.

Is Starbucks Watering Down Its Coffee Brand? | Business 2 ...

Royalty-free image courtesy of stock.xchng

Starbucks Coffee Company has evolved tremendously since it opened its flagship store in Seattle back in 1971. The company still sells coffee, certainly, but both the business model Starbucks arguably originated and the overall coffee retail landscape have seen dramatic transformations over the past 41 years.

CEO Howard Schultz? already a coffee shop owner?purchased Starbucks in 1988 and then took it public in 1992, after expanding to 165 outlets across North America. Even in the midst of this hyper-growth, however, Schultz?s goal was to operate the company like a much smaller enterprise and ensure that each store delivered the ?Third Place? experience that continues to be part of the company lore.

Remember, back in the late ?80s, a cup of coffee was no more complicated than the ?Mr. Coffee? machine parked on your kitchen counter?and that?s undeniably part of the reason Starbucks became an addiction for many consumers. The company?s signature espresso confections and whole bean brews were new to many American palates, and customers streamed into stores, preferring the convenience/novelty of having baristas blend their favorite drink.

But recently, the at-home coffee experience has changed radically. Now, caffeine addicts can whip up java in a French press, a vacuum coffee maker, a stovetop espresso pot, a single cup pod system . . . or some other gadget sure to hit the retail shelves this holiday season.

With well-timed additions to its product range?from high-end espresso makers to Zia instant coffee packets ?Starbucks has stayed at the forefront of the home brewing push. Although with each new item, many critics have decried that the company is undermining its core draw: the in-store beverage.

Now, that buzz is getting louder with Starbucks? latest rollout: a Starbucks-branded single cup system. Three out of four Starbucks customers don?t yet own one any kind of single-serve coffee system, and sales in this category have skyrocketed 168% in the last year alone. With the expiration of the patent on the popular ?K-Cups? for Keurig machines, the space is ripe for invasion?and there?s no question Starbucks knows an opportunity when it sees one.

But isn?t this new Verismo System just the tip of the Starbucks product iceberg? The company also sells (depending on the neighborhood) packaged treats, boxed lunches, home d?cor items, CDs of the music played in-store, a huge selection of mugs (travel and otherwise), coffee table books, toys . . . you name it. Starbucks also licenses product lines to grocery stores (primarily beans, instant coffee, prepared cold coffee drinks and cookies.) Whew!

Of course, it?s this iceberg-sized list that puts Starbucks squarely in the sights of brand strategy mavens, who complain that the original Starbucks brand is slowly being eroded by an ever-expanding product range. What does ?Starbucks? mean to today?s consumers? If it?s not about beans and lattes, what does the brand stand for?

According to Schultz, it?s all about the experience. While the ?third place? concept has always been core to the company?s efforts, his current expansion plans are more about extending the Starbucks experience to every area of customers? lives, i.e., more home brewing options and more non-coffee products marked with the ?Siren? logo.

Will the Starbucks brand continue to mean ?coffee? to most of us? Will the company?s foray into another brewing technology slow the flow of customers into its stores? Is it possible for an iconic company to change what its known for, without impacting its popularity . . . or perhaps contributing to a downward spiral?

The market will ultimately decide, and analysts will be watching . . . undoubtedly with a strong cup-of-joe close at hand.
