Russia plans to prosecute Putin critic: lawyer

Russia is planning early next week to charge Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption crusader and a leader of the opposition, in a probe over losses at a state-owned firm, his lawyer said Friday.

The probe represents one of the most serious legal challenges yet for Navalny, 36, a charismatic lawyer who has twice spent short stints in jail for his role in protests against President Vladimir Putin.

"Alexei has been ordered to appear Monday at the Investigative Committee (in Moscow) to face charges over the so-called KirovLes case," defence lawyer Vadim Kobzev told AFP.

Kobzev said he did not know whether Navalny would be arrested but added he could face between two and five years in prison under the charges of causing damage to assets.

Investigators earlier this month re-opened a two-year-old probe against Navalny after Russia's top investigator Alexander Bastrykin dressed down his subordinates for closing it earlier this year.

According to investigators, forestry firm KirovLes company sustained losses of over 1 million rubles ($30,900) between April and August 2009 due to actions of Navalny who at the time was an adviser to the Kirov region's governor.

Navalny has denied the charges. A spokeswoman for the Investigative Committee declined to comment on Friday.

Known for his rousing rhetoric and knack for catchphrases, Navalny has emerged as the star of the protest movement against Putin's decade-long rule and one of its biggest hopes as a serious challenge to the Russian strongman.

Over the past months he tirelessly encouraged Russians to fight for their rights and published a number of reports exposing corruption in the government and state companies.

In April, Time magazine named him among the world's 100 most influential people.

Opposition activists and rights campaigners accuse the Kremlin of a ruthless crackdown on the motley opposition movement since Putin's return for a historic third term in May.

In less than three months after Putin started his new term, the Kremlin-controlled parliament has rushed through a string of laws that raise fines for protesters and force internationally-funded non-governmental organisations to carry a "foreign agent" tag.

Gunman in Afghan police uniform kills 3

An individual wearing an Afghan police uniform opened fire on a group of civilians in western Afghanistan on Sunday, killing three civilians and wounding several others, a senior U.S. military official confirmed to NBC News.

The casualties included Americans and the shooter was also killed, officials said.

The civilians were contract workers for NATO's International Security Assistance Force. They were working at a regional training center for Afghan security forces based in Herat but there was no word yet on their specific job duties.

It wasn?t immediately known if the shooter was an actual police officer, the official said.

The Art of Office Productivity | Business 2 Community

Take a quick second and ask yourself where do you go when you want to be super productive? The kitchen? The backyard? The train? Maybe it doesn?t matter where, so long as it?s early in the morning or late at night? Any of these answers sound familiar? I know that when I have to be productive, I have to be at my dinner table where I can spread out all my important documents. Ever feel frustrated that each day you go to the office to be productive and yet when you leave, you feel like nothing was accomplished?

Jason Fried, co-founder and president of 37signals ? makers of tools like Basecamp, Highrise and Campfire ? has a radical new approach to getting work done at the office that I want to share with you. In a TEDx talk, Fried explains his interesting theory why we aren?t more productive while at work. According to Fried, work is a lot like sleep: to get a good night?s sleep (or a productive day?s work) you can?t be interrupted. He believes that ?People really need long stretches of uninterrupted time to get something done. You cannot ask somebody to be creative in fifteen minutes, and really think about a problem. You may have a quick idea, but to be in deep thought about a problem and really consider a problem carefully you need long stretches of interrupted time.?

When was the last time you had 3 hours of uninterrupted time to really be productive at work? It?s pretty rare, right? Fried believes that today ?People go to work and they?re basically trading in their work day for a series of work moments?it?s like the front door of the office is a Cuisinart and you walk in and your day is shredded to bits. ?Cuz you have fifteen minutes here and thirty minutes there, and then something else happens are you?re pulled off your work? and then you?ve got twenty minutes, and then it?s lunch, and then you have something else to do?and before you know it, it?s like five pm. And you look back at your day and you realize that you didn?t get anything done. ?So, how can we expect people to work well if they are being constantly interrupted all day at the office? Fried believes that the two largest distractions for employees are managers and meetings, what he cutely refers to as the ?M&Ms?.

The problem with managers is that they interrupt employees at times when they are trying to get meaningful work done. Odds are they will unintentionally interrupt employees at the wrong time. Fried paints the following example, ?you are trying to do something that they are paying you to do, they [managers] interrupt you ? and that?s kinda bad? because like sleep, it?s almost impossible to pick up right where you left off. It takes time to get back in the groove.

The other largest productivity killer is the meeting, ?because meetings aren?t work, meetings are places you go to talk about thing you?re supposed to being later.? According to Fried, meetings have two major issues: they interrupt people from their work, and they procreate. When was the last time a spontaneous meeting was called where everyone was ready to stop doing what they were working on and go sit in a meeting? Or how many times does one meeting turn into three or four, when it could have easily been solved by several people in a few minutes? They are a huge productivity killer.

What?s the solution? Fried has several suggestions to help make the office a place people go to when they need to be productive. In his talk Fried jokingly suggests a no talk afternoon. While it may seem a bit silly, giving four interrupted hours once a month is a huge gift for employees. Another suggestion is trying to limit conversations, face to face interactions, meetings ? what he calls ?active communication.? Instead, he suggests replacing it with more ?passive communications? ? such as email, IMs, or collaboration products. While some may call these distractions, Friend believes they aren?t that bad. He calls them voluntary distractions ? ?they are distracting at a time of your own choice and your own choosing. You can quit the email app. You can?t quit your boss. You can quit IM. You can?t hide your manager. You can put these things away and then you can be interrupted on your own schedule at your own time, when you?re available.? The last piece of advice he has is to limit the meetings. He believes if managers lay off a little bit, they will see some pretty exciting results.

Riot forces Maruti Suzuki plant closure in India

MUMBAI, India (AP) ? Top Indian carmaker Maruti Suzuki has shut one of its two factories in India after rioting sparked by a labor dispute killed one person and injured dozens of others.

Spokesman Puneep Dhawan said Thursday the plant stopped production Wednesday night because of fire damage caused by rioting workers.

"The plant is burnt in sections. You cannot make any cars," he said. No decision has been taken on whether to reopen the 550,000-vehicle-a-year plant in Manesar, in the north Indian state of Haryana.

A body found charred nearly beyond recognition in a conference room was identified Thursday as human resources manager Avnish Kumar Dev, Dhawan said.

The rioting also led at least 40 managers and executives to be hospitalized with injuries, according to a statement from the company, which is a subsidiary of Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp.

Labor unrest is a growing concern in India, as soaring inflation squeezes worker salaries even as mass media and conspicuous consumption stoke aspirations. The widespread use of contract workers by companies eager to side step India's strict labor laws adds to friction.

India's fast-growing auto industry, which has attracted many foreign investors, has been at the center of some of the highest-profile disputes. In 2008, a mob of workers at Graziano Trasmissioni India, part of the Swiss Oerlikon Group, killed the chief executive, crushing his skull with hammers and metal bars.

Honda, Ford, General Motors and Hyundai, among others, have also struggled with labor unrest in India, but nothing as persistent or violent as the agitation at Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant.

Maruti Suzuki suffered three crippling strikes in 2011, which cost it market share and blocked production of tens of thousands of vehicles.

The Manesar plant makes Maruti Suzuki's most popular cars, the Swift and the DZire. Last year's strikes caused a production shortfall of about 60,000 vehicles, said Deepesh Rathore, chief auto analyst for IHS Global Insight in India.

"Even today there is a waiting list for the cars," he said. "With this strike it will only get worse."

"I think the root cause is that the Maruti working standards are quite tough," he said. "Maruti has a very distinctive Japanese style of working. The workers on the shop floor spend long hours without breaks and the job is monotonous."

He said Maruti pays "decent salaries," but they are eroded by the high cost of living in the area.

"From the worker's perspective, he doesn't have a good quality of life," he said. "There's high resentment among workers."

The Press Trust of India reported that police had arrested 88 Maruti Suzuki workers on charges including murder and damaging property.

According to Maruti, the unrest was sparked when a worker beat up a supervisor Wednesday morning. The company said the union prevented management from disciplining the worker, blocked exit gates and "held the executives hostage."

After talks broke down, workers "attacked members of the senior management, executives and managers," and ransacked the property, the company said.

The Maruti Suzuki Workers Union, in a statement distributed to Indian media, offered a different version of events, saying that a supervisor had "abused" and made "casteist comments" against a low-caste worker.

Instead of taking action against the supervisor, management suspended the worker, the union said. The union denied responsibility for the violence, saying that management had sent in hundreds of "bouncers" to attack the workers with "sharp weapons and arms" and set fire to part of the factory.

Maruti Suzuki said production at its Gurgaon plant, which can produce 900,000 vehicles a year, was unaffected.

Maruti Suzuki shares closed down 8.7 percent in Mumbai trade.

Girl With Rare Disorder Cheers NCAA Champs

WASHINGTON July 18, 2012, 06:07 pm ET

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Smiling from her wheelchair, a 10-year-old girl with a rare disorder watched from the front row at the White House as President Barack Obama congratulated her beloved Baylor University's women's basketball team on winning this year's NCAA championship.

Haley Klepper, of Waco, Texas, formed a bond with the Baylor Lady Bears during their 40-0 season. She was recently diagnosed with a disorder of the mitochondria, which power the body's cells, said her mother, Brenda.

"She's a Baylor bear," said Brittney Griner, Baylor's 6-foot-8 center. "Just seeing her fight every day and hear her story and what she went through, it makes us fight. It makes us want to go hard."

After Baylor Coach Kim Mulkey learned of Haley's condition from her father, the team agreed to mentor her and her sister, Hannah.

When Mulkey first introduced the little girl to the team, "there wasn't a dry eye in the locker room," she said.

"It put basketball in perspective, and it put some of (their) lives in perspective," the coach said. "There's more to life than just basketball, and sometimes we need to meet the Haleys of the world to realize that."

Haley interacted with the players regularly before games and during practices, her mother said. "Haley felt just wonderful because she was able to be part of a basketball team."

Mulkey said the team was excited when they found out Wednesday morning that their fan would be with them at the ceremony in Washington.

Obama applauded the team's volunteer work with Haley, taking time after the ceremony to greet her and her family.

"The kid almost broke down in tears," said Baylor forward Destiny Williams. Williams saw mentoring as a way the team gives back for the guidance they received as children.

"It was something we were raised with," Williams said. "Giving them a hug or a smile, you never know how long that can take that kid's life and how grateful they will be, so we do it out of care and love."

Obama called the NCAA champions a "dominant" team that scored more points than any team in women's college basketball history.

He thanked them for "making my (NCAA) bracket look good, at least on the women's side."

He added: "I picked Baylor over Notre Dame, but I have to say I wasn't the only one. It wasn't that hard."

The president helps coach his daughter Sasha's youth basketball team.

Rights report: Chavez govt intimidates critics

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? The concentration of power in the executive by President Hugo Chavez's government and its removal of human rights safeguards have given Venezuelan officials free rein to intimidate, censor and prosecute critics and challengers, Human Rights Watch said Tuesday.

The independent advocacy group's 134-page report, "Tightening the Grip: Concentration and Abuse of Power in Chavez's Venezuela," comes four years after its regional director and his deputy were forcibly expelled from Venezuela after presenting a report that reached a similar conclusion.

In the interim, "the human rights situation in Venezuela has become even more precarious," the new report says.

Its release comes as Chavez, after 13 years in power promoting a socialist agenda that has included expropriation of private businesses, faces re-election on Oct. 7 against an opponent who accuses him of unfairly using state resources and monopolizing broadcast airwaves to his advantage.

"With conditions of a very solid consolidation of power, it is a real challenge," the Americas director for Human Rights Watch, Jose Miguel Vivanco, said of the situation confronting opposition presidential candidate Henrique Capriles.

Vivanco said he was especially worried what would occur if the election's outcome were contested in court, saying Venezuela's judiciary has shown itself "to be completely subordinated to the wishes and the needs, strategies and goals of the government."

Chavez, 57, began campaigning this month after undergoing treatment in Cuba over the past year for an unspecified cancer in his pelvic area, declaring last week that he is "cancer-free" but limiting appearances outside the capital to two days a week.

The latest poll gives Chavez a 15-point lead over Capriles, though it also found 23 percent of voters undecided. The Datanalisis poll released Monday had a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

The 40-year-old Capriles, a centrist governor who Chavez labels a "mama's boy" and a bourgeois tool of "Yankee imperialists," has refrained from personal attacks on the incumbent and focused his campaign on promises to combat rampant crime and government corruption.

Capriles is doing so in a climate in which "the Chavez government (has secured) free rein to intimidate, censor, and prosecute Venezuelans who criticize the president or thwart his political agenda," the Human Rights Watch report says.

In the past four years, a Chavez-dominated Congress has passed laws expanding the government's powers to limit free speech and punish its critics while the Supreme Court, re-packed with Chavez supporters, "has explicitly rejected the principle that the judiciary should serve as a check on presidential power," it says.

Other key complaints lodged by the rights group:

? The Chavez government "has enacted rules that dramatically reduce the public's right to obtain information held by the government."

? The administration's constant attacks on local rights defenders, whom authorities portray as enemies of the people, has helped make them "more vulnerable to acts of intimidation by low-level officials and threats and acts of violence" by Chavez supporters.

? The government's deeds have sent a clear message to judges, journalists, broadcasters and rights defenders in particular that "the president and his followers are willing and able to punish people who challenge or obstruct their political aims."

Although many Venezuelans continue to criticize the government, the fear of reprisal has had a chilling effect on the media and "undercut the ability of judges to adjudicate politically sensitive cases," the report says.

Human Rights Watch said its report, which details well-publicized and less-known cases of what it calls arbitrary government abuses, is based on extensive research and four visits from May 2010 to March 2012.

During those visits, its investigators "intentionally avoided establishing contact with government officials or drawing public attention," the group said.

The group said it had submitted written requests for information to high-level Venezuelan officials but received no responses.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Former President Bill Clinton says Mitt Romney's financial record is a matter of legitimate campaign scrutiny because he's been selling himself as a fix-it man on the economy.

Clinton tells NBC's "Today" show Romney's hesitation to release all of his tax returns "struck me as a little odd." Romney has released a full tax filing only for 2010.

Clinton says Romney's record as the head of private equity firm Bain Capital is fair game and says taking a microscopic look at Romney's finances is "just as relevant as going over m y record as governor when I ran for president."

He says voters "ought to make up their own mind" whether they support someone who apparently sought to minimize his federal tax liability by parking large sums of money overseas.

MIUI 2.7.6 Custom ROM Leaked for Sony Xperia S

The MIUI custom ROM for the Sony Xperia S which is under closed beta has been leaked at xda-developers, according to Xperia blog. According to xda-developers, the features that are working include SMS, voice, wi-fi, camera and data (for few users). "The MIUI 2.7.6 ROM relates to Android 4.0.4 and will work for phones that have both unlocked and locked bootloaders, although you will need root access for the latter," explains Xperia blog.

As per reports, some people are facing issues related to data working, while others are finding it "difficult" to glide from the Chinese language setting to English or any other languages. Users are advised to fix it by editing the system/build.prop file. Google Play apps store can be downloaded from the Chinese MIUI store or by flashing Google Apps package (GAPPS).

Back in June, the Xperia S received Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update bringing new media apps. It features a Walkman app which lets users share their music with friends in an improved manner. Users can also playback the audio and video with high quality. The ICS upgrade enables users to resize the widgets and enhance lock screen feature along with the direct access to camera app. Xperia S users have faced issues relating to update of their handsets to ICS.

According to San Francisco Chronicle, Sony has admitted that it is aware of the issue. The company has released a statement claiming that few devices carrying an SI number had experienced difficulties when upgrading to the ICS.

"Our sources tell us that although some Xperia S users have experienced problems with the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade, it's not believed to be a major problem. The issue was that, when some users attempted to upgrade their phones, they were met with a message saying that their handset was already running the latest Android version, given as Gingerbread 2.3.7., which is obviously not the latest," claims Dan Lim, editor of Xperiasprice website, according to San Francisco Chronicle.

"However, we can reveal that Sony are about to re-release the upgrade any time soon, which will let users download the correct version," adds Dan Lim. In addition, Lim claims that users should be patient and that they can obtain a lot from the new software which includes enhancements to user interface and improved battery life.

Ouya's $99 Android-based gaming console meets Kickstarter goal: $950k in under 12 hours (update: it's a record)

The gaming public at large has spoken. In less than 12 hours, Yves Behar's Android-based Ouya gaming console has reached its lofty funding goal of $950,000 on Kickstarter. To refresh your memory, the $99 system (which was only $95 for 1,000 swift early adopters) packs a Tegra 3 CPU, 8GB of storage, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, a USB 2.0 port and an SD card slot -- that price also grants you a single controller with a touch sensor. Most notably, the system is aimed at being extremely developer-friendly, having open hardware and software with a push for free-to-play content. There are only about 5,000 units (out of 10,000) (update: that number has been bumped to 20,000, with just under 10K available) left at the $99 price, so feel free to check out our in-depth chat about Ouya with Behar himself here before you head over to Kickstarter. It appears that the traditional business model for gaming consoles just got rocked, and we can't wait to see the final results.

Update: If you thought that was fast, you'd be right: Kickstarter has confirmed that Ouya achieved the biggest first day ever for one of its hosted projects, and it's just the eighth project ever to crack the million-dollar mark, joining an esteemed company that includes Double Fine's upcoming adventure game and the all-time champion, the Pebble smartwatch.
