ELVIIS Volvo C30 EV charges from any standard outlet, bills the driver (hands-on)

The electric vehicle is still a fresh enough concept that the issue of redirecting the bill when filling up at a public outlet or a friend's house is of little concern. ELVIIS can theoretically serve other purposes, allowing you to select the least-expensive energy source, for example, or set the car to wait to charge until late-night, when rates are lower.

We jumped into the passenger seat of one of five existing ELVIIS cars -- built around an all-electric Volvo C30 -- and poked around the charging interface. The project isn't fully operational just yet, and was running in demo mode so there's no way to verify that it works as described, but it definitely appears to be solid, with Ericsson providing financial and development support. Eventually, it will use the car's GPS to identify nearby power outlets -- for now, you need to enter a specific outlet ID. There's also an Android app that allows you to monitor and reschedule charging, so if you programmed your car to be completely charged by 7AM but realized that you need to leave at 6, you can make sure you're covered without getting out of bed. But you don't need to go anywhere to see it in action -- just click on past the break.

I must confess that I am a product of the 90s, a time in my early career when networking and communication of the services my employer offered took the traditional path of print advertising and brochures, direct mail, local/national trade shows, etc. These forms of communicating your brand/business still exist and, but more often they are used in balance with modern forms of networking and sharing information about you and your business.

Today, we have a more interesting challenge as the World Wide Web has offered us massively popular channels to connect with friends, other businesses as well as current and potential clients. I will, however, tell you that some of the same rules apply ? especially when we speak of the human or personal connection. Here are some guidelines I have learned to follow in today?s world, which have helped me build relationships and make the long-term connections I was looking to gain.

Make the Connection

Seek out local networking groups and organizations where a diverse collection of businesses attend on a regular basis. Make the time to attend these events on a regular basis as this is your opportunity to listen to others about their business and their personal experiences. These events will give you the chance to share your own story and the passion that drives you towards your own business goals. Also keep in mind who else will be attendance so you can be sure to reach your target audience (i.e. If you want medium to large business decision makers, going to a business card exchange may not be right.)

TIP: Set the standard in your networking process and offer newly made connections information and, if you can, do something for them like introducing them to someone who may be interested in their product or services. This trust- building activity will afford you positive results as I have not met anyone yet who did not appreciate some friendly guidance and professional help and had them NOT remember me for it.

Be ?Professionally? Social

Use social connections intelligently and professionally. Facebook and LinkedIn are great ways to connect with other related businesses from which you can benchmark or that you can connect with, as well as to multiple individuals from all over the world who have the same interests and ?likes? (Hint: These are your potential clients!). Facebook allows you to set-up a business page vs. a personal page making your company brand more trust worthy and believable. Share information on these social channels that is both informative and educational on a consistent basis and you will see your connections come to life.

Get Involved and Give Back

Are you actively taking advantage of the philanthropic side of your business? Give back any way you or your company can afford, get connected with local non-profits that make sense to you and to your business message while helping those who need it most. Community involvement is a perfect way to create goodwill opportunities and to show your community what you, personally and professionally, stand for. This will serve your public relations efforts well too.

St. Mark's rink open for ice skating this week

Southborough Recreation Director Doreen Ferguson said in a comment on the blog last week that the outdoor rink at Woodward probably will not open this year thanks to a combination of uncooperative weather and overeager adults.

Those of you looking to break out your skates do have another option. The rink at St. Mark?s School will be open to the public during February school vacation. Here?s the schedule:

Whether you have just begun dating or you are celebrating a Golden Anniversary, most partners are aware that communication is a crucial component in relationship happiness and satisfaction. Most self-help books extol it, and most experts working with couples encourage and facilitate improved communication.

Dr. Marianne Legato, author of Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget contends that without effective couple communication, there is no relationship at all.

A crucial but often overlooked communication skill for partners is knowing when it is best not to say anything.

This skill is not about suppression, quiet compliance, the silent treatment, dismissal or neglect. It is a choice that reflects attunement, empathy, regulation of emotions and prioritizing the bond you share.

It is knowing those times when your comment, critique, opinion, question or news not only fails to add value- it makes matters worse!

While there are always differences among couples relative to their personal histories and dynamics, here are some situations that many face for which the decision not to say anything may be best.

Fueling the Fire

• A real stumbling block for old and young couples who are arguing is knowing when ? enough is enough.? ?More specifically, recognizing that it is an illusion to think that there is something to gain in ? having the last word.?
• In almost all cases insisting on one more comment does nothing productive. Usually it escalates the tension and anger and jeopardizes resolution.
• As Ferguson author of Reptiles in Love?suggests, when partners are in fight/flight mode, logic is gone and no one wins.
• Stopping is a protective and important step in anger management. It prevents saying the unsayable ? those words we can?t take back. It also prevents the dangerous escalation from verbal to physical aggression.

• One of the ingredients in the intimacy of any couple is what they share as confidantes. Feeling safe, partners share dreams, frailties, imperfect body parts, traumatic memories and self-doubts in a way they share with no one else.
• Regardless of what others are disclosing, which family member is asking, or how much everyone is?enjoying ? partner bashing? ? don?t take the bait.
• Protecting each other?s confidence is a gift of trust only partners can give to each other.

But I Was Just Trying to Help

• Despite the fact that every couple self-help book recommends that unless asked, don?t give advice ? most of us err in favor of ? just trying to help.?
• Actually on close reflection, it is often our own sense of anxiety and helplessness in face of?a partner?s distress that throws us into advice mode.? We have to do something!

Coach Nem was officially introduced by third-division side XV de Jau to fans and local media on Monday. He was let go after the team's 3-1 loss to Flamengo in the third division of the Sao Paulo state championship on Wednesday.
